My sound is loud gum chewing - smack or pop it and I can become enraged. I was ever so glad to learn it was a real condition I had. I thought omg I am sooo weird. Turns out there are others and we are not weird. My friend is set on edge with the whistling sound. Unclear how common or rare the cndition is. Curious.
Misophonia, literally "hatred of sound", was proposed in 2000 as a condition in which negative emotions, thoughts, and physical reactions are triggered by specific sounds. It is also called "select sound sensitivity syndrome" and "sound-rage".[1][2] Misophonia is theorized to have Neurological origins, but there are no standard diagnostic criteria, it is not recognized in the DSM-IV or the ICD-10, and there is little research on how common it is or the treatment. Brain imaging has shown abnormal patterns during studies of suffers. Proponents suggest misophonia can adversely affect ability to achieve life goals and to enjoy social situations. Treatment consists of developing coping strategies such as cognitive behavioral therapy and exposure therapy
@Ruger5: Â My son has this to some degree. He can't stand to listen to other people chew. Sometimes he's been known to go in another room and eat by himself. He says it doesn't bother him at restaurants, usually, because there's so much background noise.
