Need some guidance here. I did some googling but I can't seem to find a consistent answer.

As a private seller do you remove the license plates and sticker from the window before the person takes it away? If yes, is it legal for the buyer to drive it away like that?

Besides signing the back of the title is there anything else I need to do?

My first time doing a private sale so want to be sure I'm doing everything right.

Thanks! 4951

Never done it, but I think there is a form you need to file with the county that states you sold the car. That way, if the buyer never bothers to get it registered in their name you have a paper trail to protect you from any trouble. 4951

ALWAYS remove your license plates and stickers, ideally you would finish the deal at the courthouse so it is a non issue but as long as the person has a bill of sale they should be fine driving without a plate long enough to get over to the courthouse. 4951

Never took the stickers but have removed plates from every vehicle and boat I have ever sold. **** a few off a time or two when I walked over to take them off, PRIOR to money changing hands. Figured it was my last touch on it before I no longer owned it. Let them drive as long as they want w/o plates, with a signed bill of sale, it is no longer your problem.Dont forget the EZ tag. 4951

@QueenBHad a really bad experience.. Yes, remove the tags and plate also your Toll tag if you have one....  Give them a receipt and if they get pulled over they will have something...QueenB is still paying the price because she left the plates/tags on the car. 4951

Yeah, a lot of private buyers think they are coming out cheaper and don't realize when they go to get the new tags and registration, depending on the cost of the vehicle, that could be another several hundred plus dollars.

My son sold his truck without telling us. Got the money and the guy drive off. Son has no idea of the guy's name..we got a couple of bills for eztag at first but nothing since. 4951

@BooBear:

Also keep in mind that sales tax for the buyer is based on the state's calculation of value, rather than the sales price. The state does this to keep people from fibbing about the sales price in an effort to underpay tax. 4951

Excellent advice all around. One more thing....it's super imperative that you complete the state online transfer form the moment the vehicle leaves your driveway. http://www.txdmv.gov/txdmv-forms/doc_download/954-vtr-346-texas-motor-vehicle-transfer-notification 4951

Honestly, I would meet them at the DMV to transfer the title.  I have heard horror stories about people not doing this and then getting dinged for tickets and such for a car that they privately sold. 4951

Transit permit to use after you take the tags off:https://vision21.txdmv.gov/Vehicle/VehicleLookupForPermit.aspxAllows buyer to drive 5 days.  The date starts the day it is printed. Download a bill of sale for Texas.  Then notify the state of the sale.http://www.txdmv.gov/motorists/buying-or-selling-a-vehiclebill of sale for Harris County:https://www.hctax.net/Forms/MV-015.pdf

@teatime:  Great post!  Quite a few years ago, we sold a car to a friend.  We left the plates on but told him that we were going on the internet to notify the DMV that we sold the car and he had X amount of time to transfer the registration and get a new title.  He took care of those things in just a few days.  If I had sold to a stranger, I would have removed the plates and still notified the DMV.
