Kalamazoo, MI
A union filled a grievance against to Western Michigan University by hiring goats to clear 15 acres of woodlands.

The use of the goats did not affect human employment in any way.
The University didn't want to use chemicals, so decided to use the goats instead.

Goats are a cost effective way to get rid of poison ivy and invasive species.

There has been no complaints about the goats, either before or while they are being used, except for the union.

@airguy: For 30 dollars an hour they well pretend to while claiming the job is taking longer then expected.

That is unfortunately the mind-set of unions these days.  Even though the goats didn't displace any workers, they might in the future, so the union objects. 4951

I'm not against unions in general, but having grown up in UAW country and then watching them literally run the auto industry into the ground because they refused concessions as the industry changed over time, I don't really have any use or sympathy for them.  4951

@Retired_Engineer: Yep- the main reason we ended up in Texas- the auto industry and all who sold to them went to hell in a hand basket

@shodan66:  My father was a union steward for many years.  He finally gave it up because he had to defend so many union members that were obviously guilty and because the union kept demanding too much from the company.Of the five locations that I worked at, only one was not unionized, although there was a unionization attempt while I was there.  The employees voted to stay non-union.  The operators and multi-skilled maintenance people were well paid. Even though they weren't unionized, they received the same benifits as union locations.  Since it was a lubricants plant, we had a warehouse and lots of forklift drivers.  They were the primary pushers for unionization because they felt they weren't paid enough (but did receive the same benefits).  Our ER/IR manager did a survey every two years as to what other businesses were paying forklift drivers.  We paid the highest but they still wanted more.  Several years after I left, they did vote the union in.  As a result, the company shut that plant down and moved its production to another plant.  A few employees were transferred to a refinery and the other lubricants plant, but most were laid off.  Those that qualified, took retirement.  So the union didn't gain them anything but a lot of employees lost their jobs.  That hurt me because it was one of my favorite locations to work at.
