I was just in the garage and got hit by an urge to clean the outside of our freezers..we have 1 upright that is maybe 6 or 7 years old but our chest freezer that is 20+ years old..we only use it now to keep heads and stuff till they are taken to have whatever it is Michael has had done to them. It defrosted once on us when the breaker tripped and we didn't know..that was disgusting and a chore but it seems to be chugging along..but I am wondering for how much longer I can expect it to work?.i don't want to deal with the smell of defrosted death again.. 4951

@BooBear: his freezer, his rules on that. If you unplug it and be a dream killer, he'll just need to go stock it back up.

By far, the worst freezer clean I ever had was when the GFCI tripped on a mini freezer I had that was filled with raw frozen tripe for the dogs. Ugh!!! Talk about the disgusting smell of death! I refroze it until trash day and I am pretty sure everyone on my block thought I was disposing of a dead body. My garage reeked for weeks. Emoticon 4951

@donnatella: Hey hey in her defense I keep all my wild game including potential head mounts in my freezer too. It is a hunter thing.

@BooBear: To answer your question based on my experience I change garage freezers every four years as I get the SAMS brand. I do this to prevent what happened to you as it happened to me once when the freezer went out and it defrosted forcing me to lost almost couple hundred dollars worth of deer, hog, and fish meat. My dogs ate good though that time.

@CBP210: every 4?? That's crazy talk and ain't happening. Like I said, the one is over 20 years..why would I replace it if it has at least another 16 years in it? I know my in-laws is close to 40 years old. Maybe you need to consider a new brand?

My parents have a chest freezer in the garage that's still going at nearly 25 years old. Seems like that old stuff lasts forever. The new ones aren't built nearly as well. 4951
