I think it Depends, if its a small job and they paying for the supplies and helping, then I would say it would be wrong to charge. If its a big job you are doing all on your own, then yes they should pay you. 4951

Is it wrong of them to expect you to donate your time?

That being said, my BIL has never charged us labor for any plumbing work except for me making him a roast for dinner. we just bought the materials. 4951

I don't think so.  I would never ask a family member to do something for free.  Maybe a discount....  If I helped.  Everyone has to make a living.    4951

If it's a big job then you should charge for your time, expense and the usual. If small, and they provide lunch and beer then no. 4951

I agree with all the other comments.  If it's a quick repair of something, and incorporated into a family dinner or event, then no charge (assuming they buy the materials).  If it's a full project, they should pay, and up to you if you would provide a small discount. My BIL has his own auto shop, and does a lot of high-end work.  I always insist on paying for any work done at their shop rates, and pay for materials.  4951

You have to charge something for your time. If it was a quick fix I would say don't charge, but they should be charged for a bathroom remodel. My DH is a mechanic and everyone wants him to fix their car for free. If he is going to spend the weekend fixing your car he needs to be paid for his time. 4951

@princecharming:  If they do stuff like feed you, and provide beer, etc., then maybe take that into account when charging, and give them a friends and family discount.  Make sure they know that you aren't charging full-price.

I used to be the family tech support and computer fixer, and I freaking hated it. There were times when a family member would drop of their virus ridden machines or crashed hard drives and ask me to either restore them or save their pictures, I literally spent hours and hours sometimes (unpaid). Now I just tell them that computers have become too complex and I haven't kept up with it, so I don't have to do it anymore. 4951

Exactly, give them a deal but YES charge them.. I mean if it is how you make a living how can you not charge???   Just make sure everyone understands going in -   Get it all straight before hand so there are no misunderstandings..   Also I have found doing business with family can be a bad idea....  Be careful !! 4951
