Customer service rant! I went to a local mom and pop dog food store, because I buy premium dog food for my dogs. I get two bags of food; a 13 lb., and a 33 lb. I pick up the 13 lb. bag and pull out the 33 lb. bag. There are 3 clerks in the store. One of them asks me if I need help, and I tell her yes, she can carry the big bag. Not lying, her comment to me is, "Oh, great. I get the big bag." I ignore her and go to the counter, about 20 feet away. It takes her forever to drag it up there, and then she says, "How heavy is this bag, anyway?!" (Guess she can't read).

I check out and they ask if I need help to the car. I tell them yes, and thankfully, one of the other girls tells me she will help me. I ask her to grab the big bag, she slings it over her shoulder, and the one who carried it to the register, tells her it's a BIG bag and weighs a lot. At this point, I can't hold my tongue anymore so I politely say to her, "Oh, come on, you can't lift that? I can, and I am about twice your age." I would put money on it the clerk was about my size, and only 25 years old, max! When we get outside, I tell the girl that is helping me, that the other one is not going to last, if she can't handle a 33 lb. bag. Pffttt!!! I guess they don't make them like they used to.

No, I will not mention the store name, because I plan on taking it up with management, tomorrow. 4951

I think you're being a little harsh. Do you know if the young lady has a physical condition that makes lifting heaving things painful? I think retail is considered "light" work, meaning you lift 10 pounds frequently and 20 pounds occasionally, so lifting a 33 pound bag may not be within her capabilities. If the young lady gets injured lifting the bag, it's workers compensation, not a good situation for either the worker or the employer.  4951

@jaynefromVT:

Actually, it is the store policy that they help customers with lifting heavy things. There are a few bags that are probably closer to 40 lbs. or more so I am pretty sure lifting up to 50 lbs. was a condition of her employment. I did mention it was a pet store, right? 4951

Yep one local pet food store does make it clear that heavy lifting is part of  the job. Either she will get fitter doing it or she wont last. Lol Im more than twice her age and hefting 30 lbs is nothing. She will be in for a big surprise when stock day comes- she'll be one sore puppy 4951

@chilladahun: What's wrong with expecting help when you buy something unusually heavy? To some people, 10, 20 lbs or more is too heavy. If a store sells it, they should be prepared to help with CUSTOMER SERVICE. At least Sam's has the dollies available for self service even though they don't help with loading.

Plus, they asked if she needed help. Offered and accepted.

If by being a joy to be around, you mean that I demand service I pay for, and not be a pushover, then the answer is "Yes!" Emoticon

Could you imagine using the curbside service for one of the stores, but having to go inside to pick up your purchase, because your store clerk was either overly dramatic, or not capable of performing the services they were hired to provide? Yeah, me either! 4951

That's what I was thinking, because on stock days, they have a lot of bags to put on the shelves, on all levels. 4951

FYI, a lot of your feed stores have premium dog food. Back up to the dock, let someone else load it and go in and pay/put it on your monthly tab. 4951

If its the one i am thinking of then he will get a favorable response- the owners want their employees to help with the "hefting" and customer service!!

@jaynefromVT: If the person is unable to carry out the functions required of the job, the person should seek alternate suitable employment.  It seems the job is a composite one with merchandise deliverer and sales attendant commingled into one job.  As such it would be "medium" not "light' work  4951
