Who would you file a police report with over an unauthorized user stealing money from your bank account? HCSO or HPD? Does it really matter?? I've tried using the police station in Kingwood previously for another matter and the officer there was not very helpful about anything.  4951

I'd think HPD..do you know who it is and you are wanting to press criminal charges Or your account was hacked? If it the latter, the bank would handle it and they will do nothing. 4951

@firefae87: It depends on the jurisdiction of where the crime occurred. Unfortunately many of these departments like to cede authority to the next department based on jurisdiction and policy guidelines. When someone hacked into my credit cards I filed a report with my local constables although my credit card company is based in NY and the crime occurred in NY.

The bank only filed a claim and shut the card down. I was told since this person has the PIN # that the likelihood of getting my money back is slim as in that having the PIN means that it could be viewed as authorized access. I have no idea who it is. That's why I'm involving the police. I'd like to press charges if I could. 4951

I wonder if the bank or ATM location has video.  Might help determine the best route and find out who it is.  Can you think of anyone that might have you PIN?  4951

@donnatella: No, I can't. This person has dang near cleaned our account in a matter of a little over 12 hours. The bank showed me where this person has repeatedly attempted to use it and withdraw large sums of money but has been declined because they couldn't get the PIN combo right. Guess it worked finally!

@firefae87: There is a form you need to fill out with the fraud department and you need to file a claim with the bank and the loss will be credited to your account once their investigations determine you did not make these charges. This happened to me two years ago and I had to fill out a form and within two weeks my money was credited back to my account.

You have been a victim of a "skimmer."  These lowlifes plant fake credit card readers over ATMS, gas stations etc.  The skimmer reads your credit card number. They also usually place a small camera to read you as you enter your pin, or simply use another skimmer over the pin pad.  Once they have this iinformation they create their own ATM card and start withdrawing money like crazy.  Always make sure to cover up your hand while entering your pin number. Also double check the ATM slot to make sure it llooks legit before starting a transaction.  I was a victim of this same thing a couple years ago but luckily was able to recover all of the stolen funds.   4951

Absolutely file a police report!  How soon after the transaction did you notify your bank?  Also, have you ever given your PIN to a friend or family member? 4951

@firefae87: I wasn't thinking one day while trying to get cash from an atm..i kept putting in my alarm code and not pin so declined. After 3 times the bank shut my card off and sent me a text to verify recent transactions. Not helpful to you I know, but I would be calling the bank and asking what kind of fraud protection they have. They may have dropped the ball.

Do you have all cards in your possession? Needing a pin means they were physically using the cards..seems easy enough for the bank to figure out if it was you or not. 4951

You definitely need to talk to the fraud division at the bank headquarters, not just local.Trying multiple pin variations helps support your story. 4951

@ForeCPA90: Well, I called last night with the first transaction and since it was my husband's card they refused to do anything about it! They wanted to speak to him. He was unavailable so all they did was make notes. Today it continued and I forced them to shut his card down and send out a new one. I filed a claim and was told they couldn't give me a time frame on how long it would be before I received my money back.

You notified them in plenty of time, and as long as you did not give your PIN to a friend you should get your money back at least.  Sorry that happened.   4951
