No idea what is wrong with it. You may want to call an AC guy. 4951

Madd air or kingwood air solutions..

I want to say at our last house the capacitor(?) Was not doing enough and Michael added something to it to get it to work for a year, but he scared me about how they hold electricity and I would die if I touched it..i never asked questions..but that was what was wrong. I don't think people can just fix that. 4951

There is a good chance that the drip pan under the evaporator coil (usually in your attic) is plugged up with water, causing a high-level trip switch to shut off the compressor.  The A/C fan inside the house will still run but the compressor won't.  Most A/C guys use pressurized air to blow through the drain piping to eliminate the plug.  It's usually a combination of dirt/dust and algae that cause the plugging.I've had this problem almost every year.  Our problem is further aggravated in that both A/C drip pan piping ties together then runs down into a 2nd story bathroom.  I'm going to get a plumber to separate the drip lines and have then drain into different locations. I've heard all types of suggestions on reducing the formation of algae.  Usually, they involve periodically adding something like Windex, Chlorox, or vinegar to the drip pans.  While our son is still living with us, I send him up to do this about once a month.  Once he moves out, I'll figure out an easier way to do it without having to climb up in the attic.   4951

Agree. Most of the time it's a drain issue. Had to clear it a couple of times in the attic. I finally started buying high dollar filters and changing them about monthly which has helped. Also getting our units inspected in the Spring. One unit is 23 yrs old so I know it's about to die. I have that some coin on standby so meh...cost of owning a home.  4951

Thanks for advice everyone. I went up to attic and drip pans were dry, no draining problem. Good thing our upstairs ac is still running well. Gonna have someone come out and take a look tomorrow.

Goodbye savings 4951

@hangrygirl: Since there is no water in your overflow pan tripping the switch that shuts off your compressor, then it's either the capacitor that starts the compressor (and sometimes the fan too) or the compressor itself.  I keep a spare capacitor because you can buy them online for 20 bucks, and my outside units are old.  A service company will usually charge a call out fee plus a markup on the capacitor, so anywhere from 150 -250 to replace it, but they will electrically test and see if it is the capacitor or the compressor.  Compressor means a new unit depending on the age of the system.  Good luck!

Like everyone else here says, I bet its the start run capacitor, which is easy to replace yourself. But if you are not comfortable with it (electricity) call Madd Air. They are wonderful. 4951

@princecharming: They make about 20 differnet ones depending on the size of your unit. Best way to replace the dual capacitor is to go back in with two capacitors. One for your compressor and the second one for your fan motor. That way if one fails it does not affect the other motor. AC units up until about 1990 all had 2 seperate capacitors and they hardly ever failed. Now manufactures have gone to tiny little dual capacitors that constantly fail after a few power outages or spikes.

@SwaggyG:

Thanks everyone for the advice! Madd air is awesome. Turns out it was just a defected Nest thermostat. For some reason it stopped communicating with the compressor.
