Favorite topping?
Me, I like peanut butter.
@Annie: My wife got me to try that and now it's my favorite as well. I do like a bit of maple syrup but I can't have much. I usually spread the peanut butter, then fold it in half, dip it in a little syrup, and eat them that way. I also like peanut butter on hot toast or hot English muffins.
@podunk: I never had maple syrup or even fake maple syrup when growing up. We only had sugar cane syrup. I think the name was Steens. One year, my father planted a nice crop of sugar cane. After he harvested it, we took it to a syrup maker. I got to watch them crush the canes for the juice and then boil the water out of it in a big cast iron pot. The deal was the maker kept half of the resulting syrup and we got the other half. It was an all-day event but we brought home several gallons of syrup.I never tasted real maple syrup until a friend from the northeast gave us some. It was so much better than the fake maple syrup! My wife picked up some Blackburn's syrup one time thinking it was cane syrup, but it was primarily corn syrup and high fructose corn syrup with a touch of cane syrup. No taste and way too sweet.
