This is not my usual sarcastic post. I am curious to know how many of you feel "grounded", and if so, how grounded are you?

Let me step back for a minute. I went "home" this past weekend for a family function. I don't get home very often, but I got to see a lot of my police friends and some of my "regular" friends, as well as family. It's always good to catch up with friends. While having breakfast with one particular group, they asked the usual question about "when are you moving back?" I gave them the usual, "My life is in Houston, now", and never gave it two thoughts - until the next day when one of my police friends said that he was going to retire at 60 and get out of town, maybe moving out west somewhere.

It struck me then. I am not "anchored". I chose not to have children. I agreed to marry my husband and move to Houston, away from my family, friends and career in law enforcement. I started a new life, here, but like most married couples, my husband and I set into a routine where we were each other's best friend (not a bad thing), and then we socialized less and less, because we had each other. We became home bodies.

Fast forward several years, and my husband and I divorced, remained best friends, but he died unexpectedly, very shortly after our divorce. I picked up the pieces and forged on as best i could. I grieved. I had support from a really wonderful group of friends. I survived, but with the turn of events this weekend, I realized I really don't have a complete life here, or back home. I have no kids. I have no grandkids. My friends are busy with their own lives and families. I have some friends who want to move away when they are older, too. I have to say, all of this really has thrown me for a loop. Am I really "living" my life, or just getting by and making sure my bills get paid? What about you? 4951

@ExBlue: Add one thing to that. Is there somewhere else you want to be or something else you want from life?

I think we all function in "just getting by" mode at times. I thought I was grounded more until my son and one of my daughter's decided to move away from here and she took my granddaughter which is the light of my life. I'm definitely in a life transition right now. I'm kinda dragging my feet, sort of consciously unconsciously. I'm not good with change. I've worked my whole life for stability and moving away from the known to the unknown is hard. I have no idea what tomorrow wiill bring and that's an unfamiliar place for me. 4951

I'm grounded in the sense I need to be here for my son and I want to be near my daughter. BUT I could be ok anywhere. I would never ever move back to Ohio- I was never grounded there- from the time we moved there when I was 9 until the day we moved when I was 44 I dreamed of leaving Ohio. I don't dream of leaving Houston but hubs and I have talked about retiring in Germany. 2 major things hold us back- winter and our son.
I do feel like I'm living my life- I tend to be a loner so don't have tons of friends by choice but I have my people who I lean on. I'm not that close with my extended family or hubs. The move changed us- we're more liberal and adventurous and open minded than we used to be and none of our families get that.

I guess I find that most people I meet who have not had "loops life threw" at them seemed to be more grounded. I don't know they don't seem to be able to see outside their box let alone get out of their boxes. But when you have had major issues to deal with you have to be flexible and realize the life is short and precarious - so you'd better live it.
Just my thoughts 4951

@ExBlue: Existential crises are always present.  You have just come face to face with the latest iteration of the what is the purpose to my life without the benefit of children or grandchildren to point to.   Who knows what your answer will be.  I have a childless cousin who explains his purpose is to be a potential organ donor for his nephews and their children.  The longer we live the more we need new excuses we need to continue doing so.

@CantStandTex: I know and if I could grant you a wish - it would be that. I understand- I felt the same way about Ohio. I can barely stand to go visit family. I always felt like odd man out there. It was just ugly and not home to me! And when family ask when we're moving back I tell them when He'll freezes over. They don't get me

Being grounded is an uncommon situation today IMO. The days of working for the same company 30-40 years, being married for a lifetime are no longer the norm.I think I am grounded now but who knows? That could change at any given point but I am use to it being retired military and now working in a new field. I kind of like being grounded now but I do miss the other lifestyle at times. Learning new skills, meeting new people, places, appreciating more things. I have learned so many things about other cities, professions, foods. Picked up a lot of cool stuff. Does not happen if I am grounded. 4951

I just have realistic expectations. I'm not a fan of this much concrete, postage stamp lots and people. I'll leave as soon as there's opportunity (full time..not just weekends) and it annoys the mess out of me that my kids won't have the upbringing I did. 4951
