I know there are a lot of dog lover's here, so I thought I'd see if I could get a recommendation for a cheaper food, that's still high quality.  Currently, we're using Zignature Zssentials and it's about $65 per 27 lb bag locally.  We need it to be grain free and chicken free.  One of our dogs is allergic to chicken.  Anyone? 4951

Fromm is reasonable, and comes in different "flavors". ..can order from Chewy online or get locally.   Our extended family has fed Taste of the Wild for years...grain free and in different flavors as well.  If you go to FurBabies (formerly Pampered Paws) by Steinmart, Jamie can give you options and also samples of many of the foods they carry.  She is VERY knowledgeable. 4951

I am feeding a food for Mature dogs by Kirkland (Costco brand). It's got a high rating.Kirkland does make other varieties including a grain free.  Costs under $30 for a 40 lb bag.Check out www.dogfoodadvisor.com to compare the different brands and varieties. 4951

@gigem09:  That's a great website!  I was traumatized the first time I perused it and saw how awful some of the junk is that people feed their dogs. 4951

I second the Victor dog food.  Our dogs eat Ocean Fish with Salmon.  My GSD can't eat grain based foods. 4951

I used to feed Victor's and can vouch for it.  I like that there is a variety of flavors.It's not sold everywhere.  Do you get it at the feed store?The Hardware store on the 59 feeder at Aldine Mail Route (or is it Mt. Houston?) carries it. 4951

Rich people problems. I dont pay that much for ribeye steak for myself for a once a week treat. I try to feed my dogs a lot of raw stuff if possible, but forget paying what is posted above...........for dog food. 4951

@Steven H:

Then you are happy paying higher vet bills and not doing all you can to ensure your dog lives a long, healthy life. 4951

@Steven H: If I were rich, I wouldn't be lookin' to save a few bucks on dog food.  4951

Fromm and Victor's are both really good.  When I got my pup she was a picky eater and grain made her itch.  At that time Fur Babies (On KW Dr by Jason's Deli) gave me some sample bags to see what she liked before I spent the $$ on a big bag she was not going to eat.  Pet Ranch also lets you bring the food back (even if it is opened) it the dog does not like it. 4951

I went from Victor's to Fromm and now Kirklands.I do mix in canned dog food that I buy from Trader Joe's - it's high rated too.My dogs like the Whitefish and potato that Fromm's makes.It's twice the price of the Kirkland brand though & I was buying the canned food to mix in too. Got way too expensive for me. 4951

As an awesome additive to any dogfood, healthy and damn good for the doggies.......Go to HEB, buy chicken quarters for 5.49 for a 10 pound bag..........CHeap and very good for the animal. Give  it to them RAW, not cooked, with the bone.CHeck it out yourself, It took me a while to get used to this as I was of the mindset to NEVER give dogs chicken bones........(Cooked the will splinter, raw is fine they digest it well)........My dogs coats are better and shinier, the stools are solid and actually just turn white after a few days and are smaller.Raw meat food is so benificial  for your dogs..........I also give them liver, pork butt (.77 a pound)......... 4951

I have had really good luck with Purina pro brand, but it isn't much cheaper than what you are paying.
Also Purina one in a pinch seems to be good, at least for Echo, she just likes Purina brand for some reason.
