Any fencers around? It's getting on towards time for one of my sporadic returns to the sport. I'm guessing the 10-years-out-of-date webpage suggests the local option is defunct, which means Woodlands. Any intel available, or perhaps occasional carpooling interest, on either of the clubs out there? (I found their websites, but if one or the other is an easier commute from here and/or currently more epee-heavy or adult-friendly vs. all kids, that seems good to ask about locally before scoping them out in person. Thanks!) 4951

I enjoy watching fencing during the Olympics.  The speed and stamina of the contestants is impressive. 4951

I fenced in college.  Lots of fun! Wish I had stuck with it.  Only sport I ever had potential in. 4951

@CantStandTex: just remember, it's "sports equipment", not "weapons" or "swords"! (key words to remember when traveling with one's sports equipment)@Retired_Engineer and @Puzzlegeek:Never too late to start/return! Too late to be an Olympian, sure, but it's fun and good exercise. My club up north had plenty of adult beginners/returnees, and long-ago Austin club had some too. It's also one of the few sports where families can end up competing against each other in the same event, if they so choose.(I probably shouldn't be recruiting 'til I find out how the Woodlands clubs are for adults - some places ARE youth-centric vs. recreational, since that's where the future Olympians are found, but surely at least one will have a good mix.) 4951

One man's sports equipment is another man's shank in parts of Houston. 4951

@jjapt; Right because around here, I am not sure sports equipment or swords are peoples first line of defense.

@CantStandTex:  Can men and their swords really be completely trusted?

@jjapt:  I've never participated in fencing and I won't be starting at my age.  I said I like to watch it. I also like to watch college football, but I'm not going to be doing that either.   Emoticon

@Retired_Engineer: Fair enough, but unlike college football, if you ever change your mind, it's possible! There's a memorial tournament up in Michigan for a fellow who was still fencing in his 90s.(I'm glad you enjoy watching it though - until the sabre women did so well awhile back there wasn't much coverage, and it can be hard to follow sometimes. At Olympian speeds it can be hard to decipher the whole "right of way" thing.)

Ok, apparently no local fencers, or none brave enough to post.. Oh well. Thanks for reading in any case! If anyone's interested in giving it a try at some point, check with me in a few months and I'll report on whichever club is friendlier.(For the record, not a man, completely trustworthy with my sports equipment, and no carpooling until people have already met at a fencing venue. I'm not on much, but my husband & I fenced in college (20 yrs ago). We have our own equipment still & would be interested if there's anything local ever. We are out of practice, but we enjoyed it very much way back when. Please pm me if you get anything going so I'll get an email notification. 4951

@Ducatisti: Cool, I'll PM in a few months with the returnee fencer assessment.@mdjice: ah, excellent, thank you - Sword Sports was not on my radar. I don't know the owners, but recall their name from my Austin-centric initial round of competitive fencing, before a couple hiatuses. From website, looks like a similar philosophy to my pre-return-to-Texas club. Am I correct in guessing it's a bit more laid back than some? (Somehow I don't see Alliance teaching zombie defense, but perhaps they do...)How's the typical adult/teen epee turnout? (we can take it to PM but figured it doesn't hurt for the info to be available to any future searchers)Thanks! 4951
