Two years ago I sold a truck to a guy in Porter and filed the required information online with the state. But I didn't know to take my plate and window sticker off the truck. Since then, the new owner has never transferred the plates to his name so all of his toll road charges are billed to me. He didn't transfer the plates because he knows that he won't have to pay his tolls if the plate isn't registered to him. He's gaming the system, breaking the law, and stealing thousands of dollars from Texas taxpayers. And according to the DMV and TxTag, there is nothing that can be done to stop him. Not that I'm going to stop trying.So, a word of advice ....when you sell a vehicle, remove the license plate, the window sticker, any toll tag, and all permit stickers. Be sure to get a bill of sale signed, and file the DMV's online transfer form the moment the new owner drives away with the vehicle.  4951

@Andreweggplant: You think like me! I have my screwdriver and I'm watching for the truck every time I go out!

Last car sale I made, we met at the place where the new owner paid the tax, got a title and got the new plates in Humble.  We took the old ones off in the parking lot. 4951

@QueenB: Great advice...But do it even if you trade it in to a dealer.

@QueenB:

That begs the question of, how are they renewing the windshield sticker?
If it was in your name, it would come to your address. 4951

@FoFa: I don't imagine he is renewing the window sticker but I don't know for sure. I ran the plate and it is indeed still in my name. I don't know how these criminal fools do what they do.

@Ebola: Off the hook for the toll costs but not for having to call and hold for the TxTag people every month for 2 years. Some of the toll roads require all of the paperwork faxed to them and then they will "decide" if I have to pay or not. I've even gotten lawyer letters. The worst part is the fact that this idiot is stealing thousands of dollars from taxpayers and easily getting away with it.

Anytime you sell a vehicle, take the plates, period, no exceptions. This forces them to get their own plates, so its not your problem anymore. They cant drive around long w/o one and not get stopped. I think you may be paying for those toll charges, or be banned from it. They are hard to prove wrong. 4951

Report the car stolen and get it back. Hopefully he lost his copy of the bill of sale. Or maybe deny to the police that that's your signature on his bill of sale. Keep his money and get your car back. That'll teach him! 4951

@squirtismyboy: You're too funny! That really would teach him but I can't see myself stooping that low. I'm sure karma will bite him one day for being a low-life thief!
