As a reminder, Gabrielle Giffords was the congresswoman who survived an assassination attempt in 2011 after being shot in the head.  Since then, both she and her husband (US Navy Capt Mark Kelly - retired) have often been in the news condemning how easy it is to get firearms in this country.  She resigned her seat to focus on rehabilitation and has made great progress. The Navy has named a littoral warship USS Gabrielle Giffords after her.  Littoral means shallow water or close to shore.  I also assume since it is a warship, that it carries weapons.I guess I don't understand the logic.  Why not name a bridge, highway, or building after her? 4951

Same reason we name weapons Tomahawk and Apache but politicians blow a fuse over a football team name.  4951

Keep in mind that she's not opposed to the military, or the military possessing weapons for defense of the country, but rather to individual citizens having easy access to weapons.  It would seem though, with what happened to her, that a bridge or street name might have been more appropriate. 4951

@Metro07:  Actually, Congress approved the name of the ship soon after she was shot and before it was even built. The ship is going to be launched from the Galveston port soon. What makes it even more unusual is that it is very rare to name a ship after a living person.

@Retired_Engineer: 13 ships since 1850 have been named after living people most of them after 1950 including Henry M. Jackson, Carl Vinson, John C. Stennis, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, and George Bush(shamelessly stolen from Wikipedia) all of them having fairly deep ties to the Navy which is true of Gabrielle Giffords. I honestly think the Navy was just looking to get some more press time for their really expensive toys so they named it after a hot topic on capital hill.

Shouldn't they launch it from her ocean front property in Arizona instead of Galveston?  4951
