>> We did our own last year. We missed a couple of deadlines and ended up having to present our case to the 3-person panel. They were very nice, but I did spend a lot of time preparing for it. When the Harris County person presented his rebuttal, he based it solely on one page that we had seen but didn't realize would be the only source of their argument. Now we know better and will be prepared.
@HollyHobby:
Help! I'm submitting my protest today. They want to go up $27k. Did you include comparable houses for sale that are listed at much less than what they want to go up to? Any tips you can provide? I've never done this and need all the help I can get. Thx!
@lisapisabobisa:  Unfortunately, on the form you fill out, there's very little room for an argument, right? As I recall, just a couple of lines. That 27K is probably 10%, which is their standard increase. Here's the thing. They ONLY consider homes within the tiniest radius from your home. You would think that all of Kingwood, more or less, would be comparable, but that's not how they do it. They pulled up comps (not real estate comps but the ones on their Harris County tax pages online) and those were the only valid comps, to them. Like .2 miles from your house. They presented that as a sort of trump card -- a-ha!! See?? This house is just .2 miles from you and has a value of $... and this one is just .4 miles and here's the value.We had asked for comps from our real estate agent, but those aren't what they go by.
