31 U.S. dog bite-related fatalities occurred in 2016. Despite being regulated in Military Housing areas and over 900 U.S. cities, pit bulls contributed to 71% (22) of these deaths. Pit bulls make up about 6% of the total U.S. dog population.2Together, pit bulls (22) and rottweilers (2), the second most lethal dog breed, accounted for 77% of the total recorded deaths in 2016. This same combination also accounted for 76% of all fatal attacks during the 12-year period of 2005 to 2016As friendly as some pits may be, when they twist off they cause severe damage. 4951
Pit bull is no longer a breed of dog, it is any dog of unknown origin that doesn't look like any other breed the reporting officer knows of. As long as it has a short muzzle it is a pitbull or a pitbull mix of some kind because the people responsible don't know the breed they just lump anything with a short muzzle under the label of Pitbull. 4951

My granddaughter just got attacked by a bulldog. Â In one second it went from wanting to be petted, spotted the 2 year old girl, who never touched it and attacked her. Â My daughter said it was a fight to get the dog to release its mouth from her little girls leg. Â It took two adults to get the dogs away from her and then it kept jumping up on the mom to try to get the baby held above her head. Â At the doctors, they found several good bites on her thigh and then her foot got infected from another bite. Â From this point on, no matter what breed, we will be on alert. Â We will always err on the side of caution with a dog not known to us. Â 4951
