I just had a most awful experience with Hunni of Twyla's Friends.  My neighbor was fostering a puppy, and I wanted to adopt it.  I have spent some time with the puppy, my neighbor has trained her and loved her too.  She was excited by the idea that she would get to see her grow up if I adopted her.  I filled out the application, and Hunni just told me that I was a very good candidate, but I can't have the dog because I don't have a fenced back yard.  Hunni told my neighbor that she was coming to take pictures of the puppy, but she walked up and said,  "I have come to get the puppy."  I have a 12-year-old schnauzer who I raised in this town home, who gets frequent walks, who stays outside on a long tie while I work in the yard, and on and on.  In this world where there are countless animals who need homes, I won't have any trouble finding another puppy.  However, this is a puppy who already had someone who loves her, and I can't have her. 4951

I believe all rescues have rules and fenced property is usually one of them. I am sure you will get another dog, probably one that ran away from an unfenced property.  I am also sure you are unhappy but you should not disparage online an organization trying to do the right thing.  4951

@lolli:

Twyla's does a lot of good. I'm sorry this happened. A fenced yard is a requirement. I'm sure you will find another puppy. Maybe we will hear from someone on why they took the puppy from your neighbor. 4951

So, in order to own a dog you must have a fenced yard ?    There are many many apartment owners in Kingwood who own dogs.  There are also many many dog owners in Kingwood who lose their dogs (all the time) who have fences.  Go find another rescue. 4951

No, in order to get a dog from a rescue you will probably need a fenced yard.  4951

Twyla's Friends is run by amazing Angels who are exhausted from taking in strays, runaways, abused, neglected dogs that people dirregard as soon as the dog becomes work. Unless you have a fence , you shouldn't take a rescue into that environment ... some of this dogs have behavior issues and can't just be tossed into a fence less yard with another dog and children.
Hunni and Sylvia are the biggest advocates for dogs that I know. This isn't about ego, so I back Hunni. Please don't slander a charity organization because you didn't like their advice. They truly are concerned about each animal and want to find the forever home asap, sometimes , that takes time 4951

I think everyone needs a fenced yard for their dogs in a perfect world. Dogs love to run but need to be safe. I know dog owners in apartments are also wonderful dog owners and they help in finding lost and found dogs. It's just a requirement for most rescues. 4951

We have adopted four dogs over the years from Twyla's Friends and having a fenced-in back yard is one of their requirements for adoption.  We have always been pleased with their orderly adoption process. My daughter lives in an apartment and adopted a very small dog from a different agency.Don't slam Twyla's Friends if you don't meet their stated rules. 4951

We have rules too- we don't adopt our labs to people who live in apartments or those who don't have fences.
Here's why

-most apartments don't allow big dogs so if we allowed people to adopt chances are the apartment manager will find out and the people will have to get rid of it. I have personal experience of this- one of my foster fails came from an owner who had 2 dogs crated 18 hours a day to keep them quiet. She took them to her vet and said that either the vet take them or she'd take them to the shelter. These were 8 year old dogs who had spent their whole lives together.

- it's imperative to have a fence- chaining them or kenneling them outside just isn't a great option. We end up with so many dogs that have either run away ( and we can't find their owners) or they have spent their lives chained. Having a fence is no guarantee but it does show that the owner is open to making responsible choice for their pets well being.

We spend a ton of time vetting, training and raisin these dog. We have rules so that we know we have taken every effort to ensure that these dogs have forever homes. I work with a lab rescue and we have a lot of rules.
Twyla's has a very good reputation and I've even sent people their way for a new pet.

Please do not take it personally or emotionally. It's nothing against you- the rules apply to everyone. I had to get rid of sago palms in my yard before I could adopt my foster fail.

I'm sure you will find a new friend- Harris County and Montgomery have a ton of adoptable dogs- they don't have as many rules- of course the dog may not be fully vetted or trained 4951

That sounds like discrimination. What makes them think someone in a home without be good pet owners? Each case should be evaluated on many factors and be flexible. 4951

@monyhoney: their rescue - their rules. Every rescue I have ever had contact with requires a fence- the ones that deal with large dogs don't adopt out to apartments.
There's no discrimination- if someone is not happy they are welcome to try and find a rescue with less rules or go to a shelter

4 of Twyla's? I just earned respect, I was honored enough to rehabilitate one of her returns.. sweetest dog ever. I kinda hoped he wouldn't get adopted because I wanted him. But when his forever family came, then I knew it was time to say goodbye. 4951

@KooKooCaChoo: you are stronger than me- kudos!! I'm on my 2cd foster fail with the rescue I'm with. The one is an older guy and would've had a hard time getting adopted - and he glued himself to my hubby. The other was a dumped pup- I had to keep him- I swear he's the reincarnation of my Ol Man TJ that passed last summer

Not Hunni....HAnni.  Most rescues do require a fence.  But, check with MCAS...not sure of their regulations but they have soooo many dogs that need a home. 4951

The silly thing is, rescues use the line of "Why do these breeders still exist so many dogs out in the world that need a home" then throw up a list of requirements to adopt a dog from them that 75% of people can't meet. I'm sorry that you got rejected by a rescue but there are a lot of great dogs out there outside of rescues who use rules to standardized judge you and your ability to be a pet owner. I might suggest Fort Bend Animal Control(its a bit out there) as they are always in overflow and nobody at the shelter wants to see any of the animals put down so they will bend over backwards in most cases to get you approved to take home a new family member.  4951
