Do you keep your cellphone within reach 24/7?   If so, is it for work or your personal prefernce?I look at phones, including cell phones, as a convenience and not as a demand to be answered.  When I am home, my cell phone stays on an end table next to my recliner.  If I go outside or to another room, it stays on the end table (unless my wife is out by herself running errands or gone to a play or concert).  I keep my cell phone close in those situations.  The very thought of the scenario when someone is in the shower when their phone rings and they just about kill themselves jumping out to answer it,  is absurd to me.  If the phone rings and I am busy with something, I may not answer it.  If someone leaves me a voicemail, I will call back as soon as I can.  I also periodically check my phone and text logs to see if I missed someone.  It's not unusual for me to forget my phone when I leave the house. My approach to cell phones irritates an old friend because I don't always answer when he calls.  He lives and breathes by his cell phone.  If he's driving, he will call and talk to several people during his entire drive (he does have hands free calling in his vehicle).  He rarely ever turns his cell phone off, charging it in his vehicle or at his bedside.  He says he does this in case his kids need him.  His kids are in their 40s. 4951

Mine is near me most of the time as I oversee a state wide empire of crap that could spew oil at any time. It is a business phone and I rarely get personal calls on it. Most friends or people I know deal in text or email - or call the bride.
When I give this all up I will get my own but it will not be that important to me.
Grew up with just a house phone, no answering machine, somebody either got a hold of you or didn't. Not sure how we ever found anybody back in the day, since we were always outside. 4951

@RE   I have the same rules you do as far as my cell is concerned.  When my home phone rings I might answer and I might not.  4951

Mine is always on...used as an alarm clock and I have all emails pushed to it. I screen the heck out of calls and our landline doesn't even have a phone connected to it. 4951

I don't talk on mine very often but enjoy texting. I'm more likely to get responses from kids and grandkids. Having it with me in my car makes me feel safer.  4951

@ET:  I think that's how my friend got addicted to his cell phone.  He used to work selling and supporting heavy equipment.  He was on call 24/7 for the supporting part.  He had a work phone and a private phone also.My company switched from beepers to cell phones for people in 24/7 jobs (although we all were supposed to be available 24/7).  When my boss reminded us that we were available 24/7, I asked him for a cell phone (my wife had had one for years).  He said that I probably wouldn't receive enough calls to justify one.  When I later got a personal cell phone, he wanted to know the number.  I just gave him my house phone number since my cell phone  was a personal phone. 4951

@Retired_Engineer: I am with you only with me when my hubby is out, Otherwise, it stays at the table. But I have three sisters that I call fanatics, drive and talk all the time and usually get upset at me because they expect me to drop what I am doing to answer their calls and gripe at me accusatory "you never answer the phone, how about if I am in trouble?---I said so if is urgent call 911 first then call me. If I don't answer is because I am busy so next time leave a message, and I will call you back. They get more upset  Emoticon  deal with it I refuse to be a slave to the fricking phone!

@Gramoda:  I also text more than talk on my phone.  I never really liked talking on any phone, but I will if I need to.  I hear more from our kids via text than phone calls.  I also like having it with me in my truck, if I remember to grab it.  If there is an accident or breakdown, I can call someone.  Also, if I'm traveling in an area I'm not familiar with, having the GPS is great.

@podunk:  That's what our two kids do.  They also group text message with their friends.  Since they are teachers, they have to turn their phones off during the day, but after school, their phones are constantly beeping (or other noise for texts) as their friends text.  We still have a landline (bundled through Suddenlink) and we keep it primarily to be able to FAX documents.  My wife has the Power of Attorney for her aunt and uncle who are both in the hospital.  Some hospitals still require some things to be FAX'd instead of being emailed.

@Retired_Engineer: you can do email to fax.

I really don't like group text. The only time I have to put my phone up at school is if I walk into a testing room. I'm guessing so I don't take pics of questions from the online testing material. Ya know...never mind we can screenshot every computer on the network from the comforts of the couch.

@Retired_Engineer: Me too. Our group family dinners look like this after the food part is done. It's been alluded that I'm rude for leaving early and not participating in the phone love.

@Retired_Engineer:
Its not just young people.

I have mine with me 24/7. Its not just my phone. Its my alarm, calendar, camera, computer, library. I do all my banking, shopping, bill paying, email..
Given the choice, I'd rather text than talk most of the time.

@BooBear:  I'm not ready to make that leap from doing those things on my PC to my cell phone.  I know they can do those tasks, but I don't trust the security yet. So many of the apps need permission to stuff that is personal.I doubt that I will ever get email on my phone.  The text is way too small for my eyes.  I tried it on my previous phone.  When we travel, I usually bring my tablet and check email with it.  I still use Outlook on my PC as my repository for downloading all emails.  My tablet copies email but leaves them on the server. In order of my cell phone usage, it is probably (most use to least use):Textingchecking the date and timeCameraPhone callsChecking the weather/radarGPSGooglinga couple of gamessome of the restObviously, I don't use much of the capabilities of my phone.  I am very happy and impressed with the increasing technology of cell phones and that the younger generations (including you*) are utilizing that technology.  Some of us old farts just don't trust the rapid changes in technology like I used to.  edit:  * I consider you a young person. 4951

Mine stays with me all the time but not in anticipation of calls/texts..even with it in hand I've been known to ignore them.. I like having it to look stuff up, whichI do often..

I do use the flashlight on my iPhone quite a bit.. like at night, when my dad doesn't have his outside lights on & I'm trying to navigate from the driveway, it sure comes in handy to light my way..

My 17 year old has been on FaceTime with his long-distance girlfriend seemingly, 24/7..you'd think they'd be sick of looking at each other.. 4951
