www.treehugger.com/c ulture/dad-makes-his -son-walk-home-ends- jail-child-enda to jail for punishing your child.. A mild punishment in my books. If he made him walk bare foot i could kinda see a issue. Nanny state at its finest. 4951

You can't blame a whole state for something one jackass does. 4951

The website that posted that article is not surprising.  I love trees and nature but would never call myself a "treehugger".I have no problem with the father's discipline of his son. 4951

Cali really isn't a problem as a state, it's the cities within it. Pretty much holds true for every big city across the country. I'm not sure why they make folks crazy or out of touch with reality. 4951

I grew up in a small community, the way we grew up would have every parent from my hometown in prison for life. It was the good old days, days seemed to last longer, summer seemed sooo long. We ran all over town, everyone knew everyone and watched out for each other. The old man at the furniture/appliance store would save big boxes for us to drag home and make forts out of or fill with leaves to jump in. The family who ran the grocery store always gave all the kids in town orange juice when they stopped by. Kids were told to head home when the sun started to set. It's sad a kid can't live like that anymore. I don't think that father did anything wrong, it's nobody's business how he raises his child. If he thought it was dangerous he wouldn't have done it. I wouldn't do it in Kingwood because people drive to fast and don't really pay attention to anyone else, but I would do it in a small community.
I've seen several kids around here who could do with a mile walk. I saw a boy the other day, probably 10 or 11 years old whining in public about a toy, that kid, imo could do with a 5 mile walk. Lol 4951

When my father was 2 years old, my grandfather ( very religious & highly educated ) beat him so severely that he almost died. He had to learn how to walk & talk again.
I certainly wish someone like that arresting officer had been around back then.

In this instance, it's just ludicrous that the father was arrested. 4951

@Marhopper3:

Humble ISD does not provide bus service unless the child resides 2 or miles from the school.

My school, Bear Branch, was 1.94 miles from our house in Kingwood Lakes. I rode my bike or walked those 1.94 miles, crossing Kingwood Drive, everyday (uphill, both ways, in the snow, of course).

My folks left for work at 6am. I had to get myself up & ready for school. Was on my own til they came home sometime after 6pm. My older brother attended another school & was in no way responsible for watching me.

I ran the neighborhood all day, w/my parents having no cell phone to reach me on, but when those street lights came on, I knew to get my butt home..

It's a wonder I managed to make it out of childhood alive..

@mayorofnothing:
We didn't have streetlights and our danger came more from bulls and snakes and my big brother and his friends but same here.
My kids had dirtbikes as toddlers and worked as soon as they were heavy enough(we added a brick to help) to disable the safety crap on mowers and tractors.

I'm so sorry that happened to your dad. I can't believe some people are so horrid, I hope he got punished.

I live in Kingwood Lakes too, and my kids went everywhere on their bikes, but not at 8. My youngest son rode his bike so much, I was told by the guy at bike works that it was almost worn out.

They need to leave that dad in Cali alone. Maybe he will make a man out of his son. We seem to be running out of real men who can do all the stuff our fathers use to do. 4951

I was fortunate that our street (gravel) got black-topped about the time I learned how to ride a bike.  We could go anywhere except on the highway.  Our street didn't have street lights until I was out of college.  That was also about the time they changed my parent's address from Rt 2 Box 264 to an actual house number. 4951

@Marhopper3:

Nothing ever happened to my grandfather for almost murdering my father. He continued to beat all of his sons bloody with fan belts & his fists. Also lots of mental abuse. My grandmother was too afraid to intercede, unfortunately.
Four out of five sons ended up alcoholic.
Today, both grandparents would've been imprisoned. 4951
