I did a thread on this late last year-in my case it was my fault (trying to make it around town w/out a tag and I lost) and got caught at several locations where the tag was required but didn't know it. But the collection charges were absolutely ridiculous. I'm talking about under $20 in tolls cost me almost $500. Had to pay it-and of course have a Tx Tag now-but it was ridiculous. Even if they make the mistake its hard to prove and you'll end up paying it. 4951

Sorry it is causing you troubles. It could be that the HCTRA is cracking down on toll runners and adding those surcharges to discourage the runners and hoping word spreads. It really isn't set up as a "use it and bill me" system, and it might be costing them more in admin costs to photograph, print and mail violations. 4951

Are you guys talking TxTag or EZtag? Just curious because they are different agencies who have different collection policies. 4951

@buffaloglenn: I guess mine were EZ tag (had the same atty's that collect for property taxes-can't remember their name). The EZ tag charges weren't outrageous it was the collection charges that were.

Tx tag. And they just send you a bill if you use tolls. Not penalized. I paid the bill before it was due. When I got another bill for 2. Buck and change I sent it out immediately. They claim they didn't get it. Well it was taken out of my account. Screwed up. I paid the amount that was on the stub had I mailed a physical check....was right amount. Im not paying these collection ********s a penny. They buy debt. I could see if it were over 50 bucks...but I'm talking under 5 bucks. Ridiculous  4951

Ok, let me see if i got this right.
You too it upon yourself to drive the toll roads, without a tag, not pay the tolls, you got caught, Harris county doesn't do that mail a bill thing like Austin, and now YOU'RE angry?

Is that right, or am i missing something?

@cgm10sne1: You know I adore you, my friend, and I'm always on your side, but you're just doing it wrong on this one.

They send you a bill as a courtesy instead of a ticket with fine, but repeat violations and the "use it and bill me" mindset is seriously not how it is supposed to work. The fines could get higher and higher with repeat offenses and it sounds like the courtesy portion is nearing an end or already over.

Everyone should have a tag with more and more toll roads coming up, and there really is no reason not to have one. It's an easy process and doesn't take long at all. It's much easier than the aggravation you're going through now. 4951

@donnatella:

Just order one online. You don't even have to go anywhere, comes in the mail.
Seriously, tolls are becoming a ridiculously large part of our lives in this area of the state. Can't believe it is almost $8 to get to 290 on the Grand Parkway. Almost everything new is toll laden. 4951

I had a funny one on this topic.  A couple years back, I got a bill for about $5 from the North Texas something-or-other toll road authority, and it had two charges in the Dallas area, for my mustang, with my plate number.  I had to think back, as I occasionally make trips up there, but then realized I had not been up there at that time, in my car, or any car at all.  So I called them up, and they were nice about it, and I talked through it.  They confirmed the plate number, and then said, we have a picture of you going through the toll camera.  I said, you have what?  She pulled it up on her computer, and said, do you drive a Kenworth truck?  I laughed a bit, and then she realized it billed for my mustang, looked at the plate number in the Kenworth picture and saw that is was different from my license plate by one digit.  Their reader misread the plate number and robobilled me.  We both had a good laugh and she removed the bill.  4951

@buffaloglenn: That exact same thing happened to a friend of mine who has a mustang as well. Except it took forever and multiple managers before they removed it. The EZ tag and TX tag people mess up all the time. 4951

When I went to get EZTags for my cars there were two charges on my license plate.  They were able to show me pics of my car at each toll station.  I was on BW8 off HWY59 on my way to the beach.  I did not know and at that time it was not marked properly and they knew it.  Because I had come in to get an EZTag they waved all the fees but I did have to pay the tolls.  I was amazed at how reasonable they were.  I was in the wrong but I think the girl could tell I really did not realize I did something wrong.  Getting EZTags on all our cars has made using the toll systems very convenient.   4951

@CantStandTex: LOL! That would be nice!  I'd be very rich!I hate the fact any of our roads have a toll.  I personally think it is wrong but it is what it is.  We have so many of them now that you just don't know when you will end up on one.

Much of Beltway 8 was promised to the public to be a free road upon completion. The Hardy was supposed to be completely free. They lied! I refuse to pay any tolls on those roads! ABC13 did a story on this a few years back.
