He's one of those activist ultra liberals. He is posturing to get what he wants. He's threatening to layoff over 2000 workers if this pension thing doesn't go his way. 4951

@donnatella: He isn't really that liberal, and is trying to deal with a bad situation he inherited, mostly from Bob Lanier, who also wasn't liberal.  Houston promised benefits that really couldn't be kept, many years ago, to police, fire, and other city employees.  Now it's time to pay for that, and the pot has not grown enough to do so.  Turner is at least trying to deal with what every mayor since Lanier has punted on down the road.  The city will either have to raise taxes, cut benefits, or lay people off.  Who's for a big tax increase????  Step right up, now don't be shy...

@beastmode:  Was Sly and the Family Stone before your time?  Maybe Mayor Turner's momma was overly impressed by them/him.  Or something. 4951

Seems like a good idea...lay them off. And if like around DFW, the surrounding areas will pick them up.

Bill King still sends out mass emails (if you signed up to receive them). You can read his thoughts about the Pension Reform on his blog:

I could not believe that he would go to Austin and fear monger the state to pass his pension reform. 4951

Cut your police and fire power then you start losing ground on the safety of your citizens. Once that happens, the good citizens exit and you now live in a cesspool. I challenge anyone to do either job; police or fire. 4951
