So a friend calls me couple days ago and said she smells gas ins
ide her house . So immediAtely I said don't smoke and call centerpoint . An hour later the technician Comes out and checks for leaks with his meter at all gas connections including water heater, fireplace , furnacs and laundry room comes back and said no gas leaks anywhere here in this house . So I follow up with her the next day the horrible smell is still in her house and she ask.me to go and see if I could go over and check it out . When i open the door.i immediAtely know its GAS in your house!! So i go around trying to find the leak and sure enough its the water heater . I know we all trust the folks at centerpoint and their equipment but it was very clear that there was gas in the house and it was so strong that anybody could have picked the smell up with their nose lol This could have been devastating being that the gas leak was 3ft from the water heater which could have easily ignited 😲 be careful who you trust !! 4951

Natural gas leaks are no joke. Several years ago, I would always get a faint smell of gas in the kitchen. I do have gas appliances, but the smell was just every now and then, and my husband never smelled it. Well, one day, I come home, and there is absolutely no doubt that there was a gas smell. Finally, my husband smelled it bad enough that we decided to call the gas company. They came out and immediately made us open all windows. Turns out the line going from the wall to the stove and oven had slowly corroded. All of that time, it was slowly leaking. I had the line replaced and I had never had a problem, but it could have been deadly! 4951

By the way, if you have to replace a gas line in the house, make sure you have them use a metal line that is has the covering like the material they use to make bungee cords. I don't know what it's called, but it will prevent corrosion. 4951

This brings up an interesting history.  Natural gas is odorless, colorless, and tasteless.  A Texas school (New London school in east Texas) blew up in 1937 from a leaking natural gas line because no one could smell the gas.  The explosion, which happened while school was in session, killed about 300 and injured about the same amount.  This incident lead to the addition of mercaptan to natural gas.  Mercaptan contains sulfur and has a rotten egg smell that can be detected in very tiny amounts (ppm).  Mercaptan is what gives natural gas that distinctive smell. 4951

Yes that's true I still scratch my head on how he could be so incompetent and not to be able to detect with his own nose lol SMH
