We are thinking of getting a pool.  I know we should just buy a house with a pool but we love our yard/home and we want to stay here.  What do you guys like/dislike about having a pool?  What shape of pool is the best shape?   4951

Pools seem to be the thing this year... 3 of my neighbors have gotten or are getting new pools and a 4th house nearby put one in.  I would look at a bunch of different ones on Pinterest or something like that and see what appeals to you.  River Rock Pools has some awesome pools and designs.. 4951

I LOVE my pool and it's a must have if we move. Yes you will not get the cost back at resale BUT how much will you be spending on selling your house, buying another with a pool, moving and costs to make the new home your home ( carpet, tile, laminate, upgrade kitchen/baths, paint??). Weigh it all out and see what's best. I know we need to downsize but when I compare costs it's a no brainier to stay where we are. 4951

We bought our house with an existing pool (our first). After many different pool service companies we finally decided to maintain it ourselves. We love the pool itself but it can get a little out of balance during winter or after a lot of rain but I feel it's still worth it. You can't beat it during summer.
Our advice, if you get one, contact Leslie's Pools and they will come out and give you brief course on maintenance. Believe me you will save money and be able to keep it looking better than any of the service people (solely based on our experience) while lowering your frustration level. 4951

If you do pool service , it's almost $200 month for them to take care of it. 4951

@Jpgurl:  Nothing to do with pools, but we periodically talk about downsizing.  Each time, we decide not to do it.  Our house needs some updating, but it's paid for.

We put a pool in a year ago. Love it. You have to have a pool here. It's so hot. It made our house value go up quite a bit. We put in a rectangle pool. Our realtor said it was a good idea to do a modern pool that it would help our house sell fast if we ever left. We pay $160 a month for pool service and it's worth it. We made sure our piol was deep enough. We did 4ft-8ft deep. We are all tall and shallow pools suck. No one can dive of jump in. And all teenagers and kids are foing to want to do that. 4951

When we bought in Arizona it wasn't six months before we talked pool.
I had the company Whitewater come out and give us a quote after months of research. After letting the young buck know it would be me buying the pool and dh would not be joining us he protested a bit. I let him have it about purse strings and wants in our home.
We sat down and I chose an enigma shape, standard 3-5ft, cool deck, natural boulders and 2 1/2 ft waterfall, Caribbean blue pebble tec, in floor cleaners, and a salt water system.
After quite a few bumps and an almost class action suit by several of us we swam. Took from April (signing/ designing) till August 3rd (drop of hose)
Loved our pool and all we did was a cup of scale inhibitor and a cup of acid once a week, brush the sides. Once a year we put in a bag of salt. The salt system they sold not so much so we upgraded that after 2 years.
The company was a PITA however the daily contractors that did the actual work rocked and we treated them well as they did us. They even fixed some outdoor things just cause they had the tools right there and it bothered me. So yeah they got a 18 pack every day after work. Lunches and Continental breakfast.
We now have a regular old chlorine pool. What a Pita every time it rains or the chemicals are a little off. I fought the falling leaves and it sparkled blue all winter. Broke my back but beautiful. As the sun comes out and the weather warms with April showers, the algae blooms and it's a pain. We have no choice but to treat it before it glows neon, which we will do Saturday morning. Just in time for Sunday's rain.
We went 10 years between pools and feel blessed to have another. Even if it is 30 years old. Swims fine.
Sorry for such a long post but you asked.
My advice is go salt and put your bells and whistles on it. Enjoy it. You'll find your living space morphs into outdoor living and you'll always have a clean house 4951
