I am stuck this year! We normally go to Disney and Destin every year but this year I want to change it up. The problem is, I can't seem to think of anywhere that will keep the kids busy like Disney does. What are some family vacations ya'll have taken that were fun and memorable? (kids elementary age, not little) 4951

Disney Cruise, or just a regular cruise. They have tons of activities for kids and plenty of relaxation opportunities for adults. I get that some people dont dig them, but I absolutely love them. But then again, I love eating, drinking and laying around in the sun doing nothing all day. 4951

Grand Canyon?  Lots to do there as well.  Not sure if the kids are old enough to enjoy kayaking and hiking though. How about D.C  lots to see there and educational as well, maybe make a drive down to Colonial Williamsburg, see the history and go to Bush Gardens, or take a train up to Boston, assuming the kids are old enough to enjoy seeing some of the history they have hopefully been taught in school.  4951

@Zman - we've done the Disney cruise and my kids are a little old now. We have been looking into Royal Caribbean and so far that looks like what we'll do but a part of me wants to go somewhere we've never been and do things we haven't done before.@ForeCPA90 - Where would you suggest to lodge at Grand Canyon. My kids would love to kayak and hike. They would also love DC and history so that is a fabulous idea. How long is the train from there to Boston? @Haybugg- got married in Pigeon Forge but that was before kids. I don't remember there being a lot to do with kids but then again we weren't looking. We spent our time on the golf course and at the brewery. lol 4951

I'm not sure where to stay at the GC, we drove up one evening when I was working in AZ and I always wanted to get my family out there, but we never got around to it.  I really enjoyed seeing it and I have friends who have done the rafting and hiking there.  I can ask them where they stayed, they and their families really enjoyed it.DC to Boston is about 6.5 hours by train, but both are cities I really enjoy visiting.  You can kill days in the Smithsonian Museums alone.  Colonial Williamsburg is about 2.5 hours by car, and there is a ton of stuff to see and do there, the Jamestown colony is in the area as well, also Busch Gardens of a fun amusement park day.  There is an Anheuser Brewery there as well, but I think they nixed the tour.   4951

Went to Colorado with the family when I was 13 and it was a lot of fun. We did whitewater rafting, ATVs, a train ride up a mountain, and other cool things. I guess it depends on your kids ages and interests. 4951

I second the Grand Canyon.  I went for the first time when I was in high school.  That place blew my mind!  4951

when I lived in Colorado I didn't have kids but I really enjoyed Hiking to hanging lake and trying the different breweries.  Lots of pretty hikes there.  Hot springs can be nice too but the more public ones are kinda gross. 4951

My kids loved Washington D.C. Smithsonian museums, Ford's Theater, Arlington National Cemetary, The Mall, the White House, the Capitol Building, National Zoo. The area has more than you can take in in one trip. George Washington's Mount Vernon home is only 15 miles from D.C. along the banks of the Potomac River and is spectacular. We started each of our trips with a narrated Trolly Ride/Tour Bus which originates from Union Station and hits all of the area highlights. This allows you to sort of get your bearings for the area. At the midway point of the trip (Ford's Theater) you can switch trollies and get on the Georgetown/Embassy Row Trolly. That tour is pretty neat. When that tour is complete it will finish up at Ford's Theater. Then you can hop onto your original trolly route which will take you back to Union Station. We always stay at a hotel in the suburbs and drive to a nearby Metro Station so we don't have to drive into D.C. as parking is a beast! Also, finding a two-bedroom hotel in D.C. proper is a challenge and we found hotel options more plentiful in the suburbs. Plus riding the Metro was something new to my kids and they really enjoyed it. 4951

@Bearfin:  When I went to the Grand Canyon I stayed in Flagstaff.  It was a lot more inexpensive than the Grand Canyon Hotels and the drive was very easy...

@foxymama:  Grand Canyon Hotels were seriously overpriced.   So was the food...  When I stopped at McDonald's (when I used to eat the junk) just an egg mc muffin was like $6.00.
