25 PERFECT SPOTS FOR WATCHING THE TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE CROSSING THE U.S.Where will you be on Aug. 21, 2017?This is the first time a total solar eclipse has crossed the United States since 1978 (and the last really big one was in 1918), and the summer’s brief event—totality lasts about two minutes, depending on your location—is being touted as the largest astronomical event in U.S. history.Whether or not that's true, it will definitely be the most photographed, most Instragrammed, most tweeted and most talked about eclipse ever. It’s critical to get yourself somewhere exactly under the shadow—and as nearest to the Line of Totality—as possible, since a near-miss is a total miss. You should use Xavier Jubier's 2017 Total Eclipse Interactive Google Map to pinpoint your exact location, but in case you're looking for ideas, here are 25 unique places to watch this once-in-a-lifetime event.http://www.msn.com/en-us/travel/tripideas/25-perfect-spots-for-watching-the-total-solar-eclipse-crossing-the-us/ss-AAnaLZG?li=BBnb7Kzhttp://xjubier.free.fr/en/site_pages/solar_eclipses/TSE_2017_GoogleMapFull.html

I experienced a near-total solar eclipse where I was working up-river from New Orleans in 1984.  Of course, we were all expecting it, but it was still strange that it got so dark in the middle of the day, with no clouds in the sky.  It didn't get pitch dark, but it got dark enough to feel really odd.  Some people had dark lenses or welder's goggles to watch the sun, but I just enjoyed the moment.  It was over far too quickly.  After experiencing a solar eclipse, I can understand why people in the past (not understanding solar eclipses) would react so strongly and think it was a bad omen of some sort. A solar eclipse can feel very errie even when you know what's happening. 4951

From what I hear the best place to watch it is from my hometown in Kentucky.  Everything I read from there, they are going crazy preparing for it.  Kinda glad I will not be there. 4951

@Croix:   Too bad it's so far away.  Everyone should get a chance to experience one in their lifetime.  I wouldn't drive that far to experience a total solar eclipse, but I would drive up to a couple of hundred miles.  That would be a nice day trip for a rare experience.

We'll still be able to see a really great partial eclipse from Houston. 4951

@SmurfySuzi:  We will probably be able to see part of the moon pass in front of the sun by watching the sun (ONLY using extremely dark tinted glass or welders goggles/plates), but it won't be enough to significantly reduce the brightness of the day here.Another way to watch the eclipse is to put a pinhole in a piece of paper.  Then hold another piece of paper under it.  The pinhole acts like a very tight camera aperture and the suns image will be on the paper below it.
