What is the secret for a teenager to get a job around here? My 17 yo daughter, soon to be 18, has been applying and hasn't gotten a job yet. She would be the dream employee for so many different businesses but doesn't have experience other than working for me for the past 2 years. Suggestions? 4951

Suggestions?

@HollyHobby: Apply in person, don't limit the search to Kingwood & don't be picky.

Be creative and think outside the typical fast food or grocery store jobs. Think life guarding, movie theaters, Lowes/Home Depot, etc. Keep an eye out for new businesses who typically post "now hiring" signs prior to opening.

Go out toward Valley Ranch 59 @ 99, where tons of new places are opening soon. The same for the Generation Park area (BW @ WLHP, near Summerwood). 4951

Axteca fiesta has a hiring sign in the window. I saw that the other day. She can apply online for Palais Royal, Petco, Lowes. Also daycares will be busy during the summer maybe there too. Good luck to her! 4951

We are experiencing same issue, a lot wont hire until they are 18, and all the grocery stores ( where i got my first job) are online applications, good luck with those!I sent my son to all the country clubs within 10 mile radius, grocery stores, movie theaters, pet stores etc. He does not want to work fast food, which is fine.He life guarded here in KW last summer and for anyone getting into it, they HAVE to be willing to work any days offered or the 8-12hrs a week they give them will net them valu menu food, hardly even gas money. We would get a LOT of calls to pick up shifts, you have to tell your kid to take as many as they can handle.Turns out he is going to be a supervisor for them this year, and is helping them already. 4951

Make sure all the awesome stuff she has done for you is on her resume and is relevant. When they look at it they don't know it is for a parent. Also make her dress professional and go in person to introduce herself with a resume. Even better, apply online first then go in to say you want to introduce yourself.What type of stuff is she applying for? 4951

@gigem09, so true!  I saw a girl the other day waiting to be interviewed.  She was on her phone texting nonstop and smacking gum.  I wanted to tell her to turn her phone off and spit out that gum.  You need to be put together and able to sit still for awhile until it is your turn.

@Fallon:
Your right first impressions go a long way and you must be assertive . It's an opportunity for you to go in there and convince the employer why you will be great for the job . I do it everyday when I'm out visiting customers promoting our products and services. Good luck!! 4951

Start your own business. Pet sitting would be a good one. Babysitting. Even pulling weeds out of flower beds. Yard crews want nothing to do with that stuff. Call it Weed Girl or something. 4951
