I think I am finally going to bite the bullet. After having endured about 7 years of the worst, most God awful POS LG front loading washer, I am going to buy a new one. I swear, if LG had a 5 star machine, that others swore by, came with a 90% discount, and came with a goose that laid golden eggs, I would tell them NO! This has to be the worst washing machine I have ever had. The only good thing I can say about it is, it is quiet, and it can handle large loads.

Now, for the bad. It constantly leaves my clothes smelling sour, and the really sucky part is, no matter how many times I smell them and think a particular load didn't come out sour, invariably, a couple of hours into wearing them, the smell starts coming out, and I think it is because my body heat activates it or something; either way, it's usually noticed AFTER I have left home. No, I do not leave loads in overnight, or for more than an hour or two. Yes, I have tried every tub cleaner known to man, and you think it did the job, only to find out a couple of hours after leaving home that you were wrong. Yes, I leave the door open when not in use, which is really annoying, if you ask me. The latest problem is that it is now leaking out from the bottom. Luckily, I have a tile floor in the laundry room, but unfortunately, a blanket that was waiting to be washed, soaked up the leak I didn't know that I had and I can pretty much throw that away, because it is a nasty, moldy mess. No, it is not worth a repair, because it still produces the predominately sour smelling clothes.

So for those of you with uprights (and I will miss the extra work space on top of the washer) what kind would you recommend?

I actually prefer dials to LED/LCD panels (forgot to mention the panel sucks on my LG, and I can't see time on there about 90% of the time).

I don't need a ton of bells and whistles, but a few of them would me nice.

With or without an agitator? For those of your with no agitators in your machine, does it really get the clothes clean?

I need a super big capacity, because I don't like taking blankets and things like that to a laundry mat when I can do them at home.

I want reliability, but would prefer to not have to give up a kidney to pay for a washer.

What kind of bells and whistles do uprights have these days, if any? Okay, go! 4951

Purchased an LG top loader with no agitator. This machine is the worst. Like your machine this
machine does not clean well. Husband works outside. His clothes still smell after washing. We purchased this machine bc "energy efficient " yes saves on water but it uses more electricity. I miss my old Kenmore machine that I had for 20 + years. LG washing machines are garbage. 4951

We have a GE top loader with agitator and a stainless steel drum.  The stainless drum is probably a waste as the bearings that keep the tub upright probably won't last that long, but after spending twice what the GE cost for a front loading Samsung or some POS, I will take what I can get from the much cheaper GE.  We are an active family with a lot of dirty, sweaty clothes to be cleaned and the GE does it.  If you don't get your clothes really dirty or sweaty, I think the front loaders or no agitator washers will work but they don't cut it for us.  We've had this one for five years with no problems, averaging 1-2 loads per day.  We gave away the front loading high $ non-washing washer to a friend of the family, and felt a little guilty doing so... 4951

@buffaloglenn, exactly!  No way on this earth a washing machine filled up 1/4 of the way with no agitator is going to clean sweaty dirty football pants and work out clothes.  I don't get the mindset that thinks that is possible.  Maybe they need to live in reality for a bit.

@Fallon:

I think a lot of folks just don't get their clothes that dirty, or have nicer work clothes that they want to last long so they don't want a rough washer because of it.  And the lure of high efficiency always sucks buyers in.At our country place, we have an old Whirlpool washer.  I bought it when I was single and living in Humble, then it went into storage for 7 years, then we moved it to the country house when it was built.  Connected the water line, plugged it in, and it worked like a champ.  It's a small drum so it doesn't hold enough clothes like today's larger washers, but the agitator will take your arm off if you get too close to it.  It will either completely clean your clothes, or destroy them attempting to do so.  They don't build them like that any more.  4951

My DH is a mechanic and his clothes get gross so we still have an old school Whirlpool with an agitator. It works great and I am dreading the day it finally dies. The new ones without agitators just don't clean. 4951

So top loading, with agitator is still the best option. Good to know! I will start looking this weekend. I know I saw some at Sears about a year or so ago that still had the agitator. I will need the oversized drum, for sure.

@Fallon and @buffaloglenn, if you have model numbers and your machines aren't too old, can you send them to me? You can send in a PM, if you want. Thank you!

Oh, and I agree with the low water. Drives me crazy, because every load on mine, I always press the button that says more water. 4951

Ours is basically this one, but five years older so the controls are a little different:  www.homedepot.com/p/ GE-4-2-cu-ft-Top-Loa d-Washer-in-White-GT W460ASJWW/20635 4951

Our front loader LG is about 10 years old.  Perhaps we got lucky. no problems.I did make a hook from a coat hangar - use that the hook the door open. We have one of thenarrowest laundry rooms, so can't just leave it open! That seems to solve the mildew problem.I also drain the excess water from it occasionally - or after I do the doggie blankets!  The filter/drain on the bottom left side do trap a lot of dog hair. 4951

We have a top load LG with a small agitator, purchased from the previous homeowner.  I can't stand it, it's low water and I have to trick it to add more water.  I just don't think it cleans that well.  We have a problem with lingering smells in hubby's gym clothes, so I soak them in baking soda and vinegar and wash hot as I can.  I think part of the problem is the performance fabrics too. I like the old school washers that use more water.  4951

STAY AWAY from Samsung.  They are having MAJOR problems with their washers breaking apart mid spin and causing injuries and home damage.  I have one that is 2 years old and is in the recall.  I have not had problems with it, but they sent out a repairman for "repairs" which basically included adding extra clips to the top to keep it from flying off, but that DOES NOT address the actual problem.   4951

Still using this 27 yr old Frigidaire. Yeah it's got a rusted out hole in the top, but it does too good of a job to get rid of it.

I'm not sure what I have but it's a top loader with no agitator and a computerized system that you can diagnose your machine with a smart phone.  It has latches so you can 1/2 close the washing machine when not in use.  Inside of ours smells also.  I think it's the actual water not the machine.  I have gone into a bathroom that no one has used all day and smelled something funky when it's clean.  I think ours gets the cloths clean but no one besides my 12 year old DD does anything to overly smelly these days.  She smells like a sub sandwich with onions by the end of the day but her clothes come out smelling good. 4951
