The house I am buying has a formal living room but we aren't formal living type people.  I was thinking of making it into a playroom/2nd family room.  I need to find some good toy storage solutions that aren't tacky. Any suggestions?What do you use your formal living room for? 4951

When the kids were young, formal living room, was the family room, second living space became kid space. Storage changed over time based on what needed to be stored, and what we could afford. Take a look at the Container store & Ikea and others on line to get ideas, make sure you measure things, and keep in mind how quickly things will change as child grows. 4951

We host all the big family dinners at our home so we have left the formal areas as the formals.   I must admit we do use those areas for crafts and fun stuff when there isn't a big holiday around the corner and when we are cleaning out a closet or organizing a room, that is where all the junk goes till we figure out what to do with it all.  I think you need to make your formal areas what you need them to be at this stage in your life. 4951

@foxymama, Pottery Barn has the best storage for gamerooms.  It is pricey, but looks great.Sometimes you can find a deal on it, or if you are crafty you can make some of it yourselfWe always used the formal living room as a playroom.  We moved before my kids got older, but had we stayed in that house, I would have turned it into an office.

@Fallon:

Thanks for the suggestion!  There are lots of great wall storage systems at Pottery Barn.  I didn't think they were too expensive.  Much cheaper than custom builtI just can't decide white or dark?  Dark shows dust more but wondering how white will hold up to wear and tear of baskets etc. 4951

We made ours into a study in our last house.  Current house has a few places to sit and fancy displayables.  4951

A playroom/study would be a great idea. The kids will need a place for homework and projects. Pottery Barn has an awesome project table. www.potterybarn.com/ products/bedford-pro ject-table-set/?cm_s rc=AutoCSLPIP 4951
