Time to bend over and take if from the City of Houston. Property market value went up by $17K. Might have to hire one of them companies to go fight/protest it this year. Emoticon 4951

It's the Harris County Appraisal District's new 2017 assessments.

O'Connor and Associates is the company that will fight on your behalf to lower any increases. 4951

@donnatella:

I don't think they assess anything. I think they just say screw it and tack on the 10%, which if I'm not mistaken, is the max they can increase each year. 4951

@djchavez0921: They try to get as much as they can. The odds are in their favor because most people just sit back, take it and pay it. Those that protest can either reduce the increase or go years with no increase.

Once you hire O&A, you can keep them on retainer, so to speak, and they will automatically protest for you each year. Their fee comes out of what they save you in reductions. If they don't reduce it, you don't pay.

Mine sucks, too. I fought it myself, last year. To say it is a kangaroo court is putting it mildly. Last year, I disputed my declared square footage, because I found out they included my GARAGE as living space. I had the ***** actually tell me that is livable space. I told her she was full of it; it's does not have air or heat and the no A/C part would make it uninhabitable for about 90% of the year. This year, I found the section on their website that tells them they are full of ****, and I will print that baby out in triplicate and distribute as soon as they open their mouths, then they can discount for the last 5 years.

If I could sell my house for half of what they tell me it is worth, I would sell it in a heartbeat! 4951

I don't want to pay what I pay in property or income taxes, but I have to say, my appraisal is fair.  The appraisal is just now getting to what we paid for the house in 2013.  The house is worth more now with what we have repaired and remodeled, and would sell for more than the appraisal.  Is the issue that you don't want to pay taxes based on your home's market value?  Or just that you have been able to pay less for years and are just now paying what it's worth?  4951

The house I am under contract on appraised for more than I am going to pay for it.  I guess next year taxes will go up.  4951

I got hit with the 10% too (for the fourth year in a row), it sucks, but the house is probably still worth more than what they appraised it at. I've thought about trying to protest, but I don't think I have a leg to stand on. Property values have gone up a ton in Forest Cove (and Kingwood in general) and houses are regularly selling for 30-50K more than mine is appraised at (and those are the fixer uppers). 4951

I'm curious to know how much the home values near the home on Sandy Forks with the new massive garage fluctuated with this assessment. As a recall, there were a lot of outraged homeowners claiming their property values would go down as a result of the build. Anyone care to provide a reality check? 4951

Ours did not increase over last years--in fact it is frozen.  It's great to have a homeowners exemption and be old.....really over 65 by a few years.  By checking Redfin prices for my area I feel it's fair.   The best part is that the school taxes are frozen.  I've paid to educate my kids and I shouldn't have to pay for yours......especially to take courses like golf and tidily winks. 4951
