How to feel about the presidents plan to eliminate or drastically cut funding for this program? 4951

I honestly had no idea this program was federally funded in anyway.  I would have thought the majority of funding for a program like this would have come from private and corporate donations. Meals on Wheels is a great program, with benefits beyond simply feeding needy elderly folks, but also provides welfare checks on them.  I really would need to know the effect of the cuts on the overall funding to formulate an opinion.  Despite my strong disdain for Trump, my gut feeling is the headlines and reporting is a little sensationalist at best.   4951

Did Trump say he was cutting out meals on wheels, per se. Or did he cut out so much % of an agency and that agency said the first thing they will cut is meals on wheels? If so, was it their intention that by announcing first program cut would be this one to make Trump look cruel? I doubt Trump sat at his desk with pen and paper and cut this program out himself. 4951

My grandmother used to get this years ago and I have to say it was nice to know someone was coming and checking on her.  Bad side, no one stayed to make sure she ate it.  I would go over at night and everything would be in the fridge. 4951

@sweetie: I agree. It's the agency that makes their own budget. 4951

Hell, yes. Let's just cut hell out of the budget if it benefits the old folks. After all the money saved can be used to buy military equipment and consequently benefit all this corporate buddies......how about the infrastructure   [build more toll roads with public fund]to benefit private outfits.Thank goodness he doesn't promise to kiss us after he screws us.  With that mouth not too unlike the rear of some primates. 4951

My cousin is very involved in this in Carrolton  TX area.  This might be the only day to day contact some of these elders receive. The elderly are forgotten in the US. 4951

This is the salient point on this issue.  This cut will not significantly affect MOW.  Of course, this doesn't matter to those who just want to say what a meanie Trump is. 4951

They only get 3% of their budget from the govt. as someone pointed out. It's up to the agency who gets a cut, blame the agency if they choose to cut from there. Meals on wheels will continue. None of Trumps appointees that are billionaires is taking a penny of salary. There's savings right there. No one is shooting granny. 4951

@TXSunDvl: Would it be significant if it was someone in your family?

@cador: More than 6,570,000 less meals.  I know, that is just little more than 3 meals less per person but those are the most vulnerable in our society.  What would happen if we were all told that our income will be reduced?  Would be cavalier about it?  Maybe, but not if 100% of current income is currently dedicated to necessities. 4951

Everybody wants to cut the budget but nobody wants to cut whatever program they are vested in. As a country we really do get what we deserve. If it truly is 3% than that is a pittance and could be very easily made up by private contributions....or maybe people should be taking care of their own family?  Or better yet, how about the churches make it up with some of their building funds? 4951

It cut 248k from their budget, the CEO was paid 293k in 2014. She can go out and raise the other 250k if she expects to remain at that pay level.  4951

@mulmye: It's not even a argument until you find out what was cut. Was it actually 3% of meals or was it Trump doing what business people do and cutting "some" of the fat" out. You do not know-it just gives the crybaby's another excuse to ***** and complain about what Trump is doing when they have no clue what they are complaining about.Whine and cry on if it makes ya'll fell better!
