I am thinking of planting some Encore Azaleas.  Does anyone have them to give me an idea of how often they bloom?  I understand that they are not like the traditional Azalea that blooms once and then waits for the next Spring.Looking for continuous bedding color from Spring - Fall, if anyone has any other recommendations. 4951

@Annie:

Mine bloom randomly and several times a year, but not continually.
My deep red knockout roses are going almost the time though. 4951

Azaleas do not typically bloom continuously from Spring - Fall.  I have both Encores and Formosas in my yard.  The bloom proficiently in the early spring and then some sporadic blooms in the fall.  Not much but green form about May - Sept/Oct.  It is my understand that you should cut azaleas back after they finish blooming in the spring to promote new blooming for nest year.  I think there are lots of opinions on that though.  Maybe Kingwood Garden Center or Warren's could help you decide.  They both are very helpful about asking questions.  The garden ladies at Alspaugh's are also very helpful.

This will be a thread to watch.  Have you tried knock out roses?  They bloom all the time.@Cajunmom may have some ideas for you on this.

@Fallon:

I've  had one Knock Out Rose which I'll be replacing.  I think I was a bad rose owner and it was looking really scraggly by Fall.  I had it removed before we did our Christmas decorations (gave more room to display our insanity) and would like to have it replaced.  I just don't think I want to do all roses in the bed for blooms.Is there such a thing as a dwarf knock out rose?   4951

@Andreweggplant: My mom is definitely one to think that. I remember pinching off the fuzzy leaves in my childhood.  Her theory is that it doubled the blooms that were to come.  Was she right?  Maybe so.  Those azaleas grew for a good 20 years and were likely about 7 or 8 foot tall.  Strangers would stop in front of her house and have kids pose for a quick picture because they were so grand.

How is it on the allergies?Is it a frequent/constant bloomer?  Can  you tell I'm tired of looking at solid green? 4951

I have several encores and love them. Almost lost them during the last freeze we had. Had to trim them back and they are slowly growing. I have fertilized once already and no blooms which is expected till they reach bloom time. I have had mine for at least 3 years and they bloom at least 3 times a year even in the hot summer.

We paid more and they are worth it.

As far as knockout roses go, we've had ours for a few years and they are doing great. The key I have found to them (and from a great neighbor) is to prune around Valentine's Day and feed and prune in August and feed. Sometimes I will trim after August and they seem to do okay. 4951

@Fallon: How did it weather the short cold snap we had?

Have you thought about pentas?  They'll die back in a hard freeze but come back unless it gets really cold.  They bloom constantly and are pretty hardy. 4951

I think Encore azaleas will bloom 3 maybe 4 times a year.  They do come in dwarf varieties. 4951

@Cajunmom:

I researched and found 4 or 5 dwarf varieties but didn't find them in stock at Houston Garden nor Natius.

Any insight of where to find them? 4951

I put sedium in my beds last year.  I LOVE it.It is such a stunning mix of green/yellow, that I don't even have to have flowers.

@Fallon:

I saw it at Natius. Such personality! I am trying to find one of the blooming varieties. 4951

@Annie, how big do you want them?  If you are indeed looking for continuous color, that's not going to happen.  They could be some of your foundation plants in the bed and give you color a few times a year.  What exactly are you looking for -- annuals?  Something more lasting? 4951
