No choice on gas - Centerpoint.
For electricity go to Powertochoose.org
Pick the best deal for your usage. The companies all deliver through Centerpoint so your service is the same.
Edited to org. 4951

I checked Powertochoose.org last summer. I went from .12 per KWH to .6 per KWH 12 month contract. 4951

I live in the unincorporated part of KW which means Entergy is my only option. Luckily it is super cheap. We had a $43 electric bill last month. We have Centerpoint for gas and I think that is our only option as well. Use Powertochoose.org to find the best deal. 4951

That is what I have with Gexa.  For me they have the cheapest one for the last several years.I do love that in Texas we can choose.  Because Reliant is a rip off.

@Fallon: Are those rates locked? I thought the knock on these companies was they had either a floating rate or they would fold swiftly if the prices went up breaking their back. 4951

@Fallon: I just had extreme anxiety reading that. Almost $1000 a month?! That is just crazy. Glad you were able to find something cheaper. 4951

@beastmode, my bill with Reliant was pushing 1K a month in the summer.  I switched to GEXA and it went down to 400.  Since then, I haven't had a bill to hit 400.  And this was 10 years ago.You lock into your rate for one year.  They have a 2 year option, but it is never cheaper than the 1 year option.Gexa has been amazing.  My highest bill last year was in the 300's.  But we use our a/c.  It sure as heck isn't set on 80 freaking degrees.  It is 65 upstairs as well as down every night.  During the day, when dh is gone, I do put it up to 68 or 70.  And I have a 3K sq ft house.  I don't have double paned windows or new insulation put out.

@Fallon: Thanks. I have Reliant, home is 3500 sqft. Lots of windows and skylights. Keep it around 71. I also have all LED lighting for years now. Bill has never been super high, maybe 380 in the thick of summer but just two people. I'm using a lot less power according to the data from surrounding homes and my house is the largest one on the block. I may consider switching. After reading up on these piggy back options I was very skeptical.  4951

I'm also surrounded by over 20 plus trees. I know that is helping keeping it down some.  LEDs, people laughed at them at first with the price being so high around 2009 but they are cheaper now and they absolutely make a difference. Some of mine are 8 years old.  4951

@beastmode, we just switched to all LED lights.  .I run the ceiling fans in all the bedrooms and gameroom, 24/7.

@Fallon:

The LEDs save money two ways - use less electricity and do not heat the space so less AC run time needed. We have lots of ceiling can lights. The switch was remarkable - though have to hear more in the winter.

You know that unless you are in that room with the fan you are just pissing away the electricity? 4951

Some are....some aren't. You really have to take the time to read the whole disclosure.

Some also advertise a low rate but charge differently if you use, for example less or more than a certain KwH volume per billing cycle.

Its a good deal however....I used Spark for years and they ran circles around what my old Reliant bill was.

If you do switch do it in the fall or early spring (now); once summer hits everyone's rates are more. 4951
