Debbie and I are going through piles of stuff and getting rid of them. Some things will go to Goodwill, but many of them are just old documents and stuff. We happened to find a receipt for when I was going to Louisiana Tech in 1977.  LA Tech used a Quarter system instead of Semesters.  So we had Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer.  A full load in this system was 12 hours or more (36/per if you took the summer off).  By the time of this receipt, I was married and living off campus so this receipt is JUST for Tuition and Fees.In this quarter, I was taking a Full Load (12 hours) +2 more hours.  A full school year (3 quarters) would have cost approximately $465/yr for Tuition and Fees.I did live in the dorms for a couple of years before I got married.  I think a 2-person dorm room plus 3 meals/day cost about $300/quarter or about $900/yr.For students living on campus, both Tuition/Fees and Dorm/meals were only about $1365/year. That was a pretty good chunk of change back then but universities now cost WAY more than inflation of those costs over the years.  Our Student ID was our Social Security number, so the red at top covers my name and SS#. 4951

You can barely cover the cost of one textbook now for the amount you paid for one quarter then. 4951

My state university was similar...I waited tables and could about make that money over the summer break and be able to pay my own way back then.  It is a joke what it costs now. 4951

@SmurfySuzi:  Books were in addition to the costs I show.  I remember books running anywhere from $20-$80 each. I have a very thick Calculus book that cost over $100, but it was good for three classes. You could save some money by buying a used book and at the end of the quarter, you could sell your book back to the bookstore (for a fraction of what you paid).I kept a few books from college for future reference material.  The one on Calculus was NOT kept.  In 30 years as an engineer, I never once used calculus.

It is hard to look at this. I paid so so so much more for undergrad and I know it has gone up a ton since then. I will be paying back school loans forever. Gone are the days when you could work full time in the summer and cover the cost of college. 4951

@ZMAN: me too. Paying $1000 a month in student loans isn't so funny right now.
