Another thing you have to consider when allowing your dogs into water is thing called Pythium/Pythiosis. A friend of mine, who is an awesome pet owner (if I die and come back as an animal, I want her to be my owner) said the following on Facebook, after fighting the illness with both of her dogs. Luckily, she was a former vet tech, so she knew to dig deeper. Going to redact some identifying information from her post:
Dog Owners❤️🐶❤️
This is just a reminder that with all of the rain we have had, Pythium will be thriving. If your dogs act sick (unexplained weight loss, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea), Pythiosis is worth considering.
Our dogs survived it! Our vet was not knowledgeable at the time, as most are not, and dogs are dying due to misdiagnosis. 😔
**I'd also like to add that the blood test for Pythium is just $45 at PanAm Vet Lab. It is the most accurate, quick, and least expensive compared to the other tests that are done at some universities. I found this out yesterday. A vet wanted to charge me $288 for the test and I was going to have to wait a week for the results. Thankfully, I knew better!**
