If funding for "Martha (Stewart) Cooks,"Antiques Roadshow" and "Ask this Old House" because they are " are leftist propaganda I will turn in my I am sane like you ID card.  I do exhort each of you to not allow such stupidity.  Mind you, I have never resorted to such language but sauces, old crap and replacing toilets are not political.  Ms. Fisher's Murder Mysteries might be slightly risque but hardly rising to  Justice's Stewart I recognize pornography when I see it standard and there is no way either Father Brown or the Vicar of Dibley can be deemed objectionable.  I will give you Nova and Nature, they do involve science, to a degree, but those 1st 3 shows are fluff, fun, but fluff and hardly leftist.  OK, snow flakey but give my hurt butt something, anything. to soothe it. 4951

I don't care about the political leanings but also don't think the Govt should be funding any TV programming. Maybe Netflix or Amazon will pick them up for you. 4951

Romney wanted to cut PBS funding. I would applaud this effort if Trump takes the same stance. This Old House, those lefties never leave the east coast. Then their news reporters you would think would be more objective but they are the worse out of all the news sites. And what is with all these British shows. I never understood that aspect of it. It's a NATIONAL US station yet most of the content is British in the evening. Why am I paying for this? Almost nobody who is paying for it with their tax dollars is watching it.   It's time to shut the whole operation down. If the government needs to put something out then use the networks. 4951

For the small $ per person the amount the government funds is a pittance.  Don't you see the information that lists all the private funds and trusts that DO support these programs at the beginning or end?Have your children or grandchildren every watched BIG BIRD?Some of the stupid and silly programs that are on the major networks are meant for those with a somewhat limited sense of humor.  Don' think---just laugh along with the canned laughter that is dubbed in. 4951

Not a function of the Govt. If truly a pittance then let it support itself, corporations and individuals are carrying most of the load anyway. 4951

@ET:

With all the money raising telethons they do, they should be self supporting! On top of that, shows like This Old House sell advertising before, after and during (product placement) the shows! PBS changed some about 2 years ago... They no longer use PBS, but I don't remember the new name!

The programming during the telethons are old and been repeated many, many times. I'm sure they are free to them now... Some as old as the 90s! 4951

@TexasOma: Now that DOWNTON ABBEY is gone, I don't watch it nearly as often. They set the bar high with that show and need more of them.

I do watch the shows the OP mentioned! If you haven't seen Ms Fisher's Mysteries, give it a look see! I find it entertaining, but I've been watching since the beginning and have watched the characters develop. It's made in Australia and, unlike American made programming, it's extremely well made. But it can also be seen on OVATION channel.

Another good one on OVATION is Murdoch Mysteries! That one is out of Canada...again, better made than the crap being produced here in America!

But PBS is more a business now & asking to be propped up by the taxpayers money. 4951

@jax: No, that is not narcissistic. it is not about self-importance but it was about humorous critique of stupidity.

@mulmye:
Tepid on the former, to a degree, and support the latter. I don't see those in the same ballpark as Martha Stewart, This Old House or even the esteemed Downton Abbey.

There is a lot of excellent American programming out there. Most of it viewer paid (HBO, Netflix, Amazon, etc.). Even the old guard broadcast networks are upping their game a bit. 4951
