Good morning all,

We sure could use some prayers for Smores (yes,he is that precious cutie for my avatar) We were camping this weekend and all of sudden Saturday night he starts moving around kind of like he was cramping. I laid him on my lap & tried rubbing his tummy to help him feel better. Shortly later he is up pacing and his breathing is getting heavier as if it was becoming a struggle for him. This soon stopped and he seemed better, just kind of tired and not himself. We thought maybe his back again at this point.

Got home Sunday early and all seemed okay, normal appetite, doing well.

Monday, belly is now bloated and he seems to be in discomfort, took him to Dr. Johnson at Vital Pet by Creekwood. She checked him over and said it seems like a possible stomach bug, so she gave him an IV for fluids (due to the loose stools at this point, but no vomiting) and an antibiotic called metronidazole and sent us home. His breathing that night got more labored, so I immediately suspected an allergic reaction. Nope the breathing got better since at this point he was moving around more also without the signs of too much discomfort.

Yesterday he had his tail wagging when I came into the room and was all excited to see me, but after about 30 minutes he was exhausted and just kind of laying around and the breathing thing was back and not wanting to eat at this point. Bloating is better at this point, but now not eating well. Took him back to Dr. Johnson, did blood test for pancreatitis, came back negative, so now checking fecal for possible parasite.

I know she is trying to do all the less invasive stuff first, but I just want to know what is wrong with my baby (he will be 10 in October) and get him better.

It is killing me to watch him refuse all his favorites and not want to eat. I just want to hold him all day and make all the pain go away. And dang it when the waterworks start and I can't stop he just looks at me as if to say, "don't worry mommy, I will be okay."

I apologize for the LONG post, but wanted to give as many details in case one of you mommy or daddy's have experienced this or something similar and what it was and how they treated.

Thank you for the prayers Emoticon God Bless. 4951

Your vet might suggest an ultrasound next.
Did he do any blood work?
Could be the spleen. 4951

Please insist on an ultrasound as lola suggested. I lost my dear Blue Heeler due to a ruptured tumor on his spleen. Not trying to scare you just want to help you do everything you can. You're in my prayers. 4951

This girl I follow on snap chat had her pit act very similar to what you described. Her dog was also outside and they live near the woods. Her dog is fine now but he did have to stay at the vet overnight. Prayers for smores! 4951

Prayers for your baby.  Hopefully it's nothing.  Maybe he got a bite while camping.  Wonder if that would effect him. 4951

Poor thing! I would ask her to rule out bloat and check for any obstructions in his stomach or intestines. 4951

@cowboysfan0314: If breathing is intense shouldn't the vet checked if is related to pulmonary or respiratory problem?

If his belly is bloated, he could be bleeding internally. Please keep us posted. There is a company that comes to vet offices to take ultrasounds.I was charged right around $200. 4951

Thinking of you and your dear pup. I hope Smores will feel better and go back to his old self. If he was pacing and breathing heavy/panting these could mean that he's in pain?I agree with the others on the suggestion of xray and ultrasound to rule out bleeding, tumors, intestinal obstruction and the sort. How was his complete blood count? 4951

Our 8y/o boxer had something like that a couple of weeks ago.  We saw Dr Baumgardner and she checked for bloat, bites, spleen and felt her from head to toe.  Did an xray - negative except for gas.  Have  her a shot $77.00, special digestive diet food for 4 days and Pepcid  ac twice a day before meals and only 1 or 2 treats a day.  Whatever the shot was it worked immediately.  Labored breathing and pacing stopped and she was comfortable again.  Hope Snores is better now 4951

Prayers for Smores...One would think he came into contact with something in the woods or maybe ingested something since you were out camping... His picture in your avatar always makes me smile. Please keep us updated.  Emoticon 4951

@lola:

No blood work as of yet. Is it better to do an ultrasound or x-Ray I wonder.
