I've been invited to two baby showers recently. Each invitation also included a separate little card inside the envelope....the most recent one reads:

A small request and we hope it's not hard, please bring a book instead of a card. It doesn't matter if it's well loved or brand new. Either way the book will remind the baby of you. Write a sweet message on the inside cover, and your words can be cherished over and over.

The other one just read:

Please bring a book in lieu of a card.

Its great, we did the first one (the little poem). Got a lot of nice books that we read at bedtime.and they all have little inscriptions in the front from the people they cam from. Its pretty cool. The cards just end up pitched int the trash. 4951

@terilyntx: To me, it sounds like a good idea, in an attempt to make something practical out of it instead of a card that gets thrown away.  I wouldn't write a sweet message inside, as that sounds sissy, but would write something like "I hope you grow to love reading and learning".  "Work hard and don't do drugs".  I would have given an early reader book and probably something classic like Steinbeck.

I'm not a fan, AT ALL, of demanding specific gifts, outside of a formal registry, however, these have a thoughtful and constructive tone behind it, and a request I would happily honor. I might, however gift a book and maybe a gift card, since books are relatively inexpensive.

Some come across a shallow, greedy, self-absorbed, rude and just tacky, and I not only don't send a gift, but I skip the event my altogether. 4951

I'm old-school. It is considered tacky to make a specific request. But.... I recognize it is considered acceptable today. If you find it objectionable it might be because of your upbringing or your age. I AM NOT CALLING DONNATELLA OLD or you for that matter  so please no one jump on that EmoticonJust, don't feel bad if you are uncomfortable with that request or find it offensive; others would too is all I am saying. And, I hope you have a wonderful time at the showers Emoticon 4951

@buffaloglenn: That reminds me of when I met the late James Brown when I was in high school. (I was on the school newspaper staff and had a backstage pass) .  He wrote on my program "Be cool, stay in School- James Brown".  One of my favorite sayings ever since, lol.

I just read a story about someone who asked all the friends and family to write a note for the baby to read when they got older.  The notes included things like how they knew the child's parents, and how happy they were for the family to have a new member, any way they gave the letters to the child when they turned 18, and the child was pleased to have written notes from some family members who had since passed away, and some had photos included a few even had a little cash in them. I love books, so I love the one with the little note card, the other, not so much. 4951

I have done the book in place of cards for years. I am very much in favor of reading as much as possible to the baby. 4951

I don't mind..... But the first invitation worded the request much better and gave the option for a used book.....     I prefer for the mom to buy a book and have everyone at the shower write a note or words of wisdom inside....   We all know a 3.00 -5.00 card is such a waste of money. 4951

I did something very similar for my baby shower and showers I have planned for others. I personally think it's a great idea. Reading is so essential to kids. I love to share my favorite stories with others and this is a great way to do it. A card simply gets thrown away while a book you will keep forever. I love to pick up a new story and open the front page and see a note from friends and family to my kids every time we read the book. I will even text the person or shoot them an email and let them know when a book becomes a favorite and our rotation. The poem version is very common nowadays. You will see that on almost all invites. We're not requested many people will do that instead of a card anyway. 4951

Thanks y'all. I like the idea of getting something more practical and useful like a book vs. a card. I just don't like being told to do it... kinda comes off as 'gift grabby' to me, but I guess there is no other way around it than to ask. ?

I like the idea of using a book like @GoldenGirl said, and have everyone write their sweet wishes there. Then you can just register for the books you want along with all the other baby stuff.

@Annie You are so thoughtful and sweet to have been doing this all along! 😀 Wish I was sweet like you! 🙃

I like it, I already have found my Dd's favorite childhood book to gift to her.  It's out of print.  She's not married or pregnant. Emoticon 4951

Mine was George the Gentle Giant, a Golden book. The library wouldn't sell it to my parents and they couldn't find it. My sweet, honest mom said they should have checked it out and not returned it, ha ha
