SODA!The findings show that the No. 1 purchases by SNAP households are soft
drinks, which accounted for about 10 percent of the dollars they spent
on food. “In this sense, SNAP is a multibillion-dollar taxpayer subsidy
of the soda industry,” said Marion Nestle, a professor of nutrition,
food studies and public health at New York University. “It’s pretty
shocking.”https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/13/well/eat/food-stamp-snap-soda.html?_r=0 4951

What people buy and eat is their own personal business. However, if the government and WORKING taxpayers are footing the bill, certain items that almost certainly will contribute to bad health and increased health care costs should be limited. It is not right to force taxpayers down that slippery slope and double whammy of costs.

If they want the freedom to buy and consume unlimited crap food, then they should be motivated to finance the food and healthcare themselves. 4951

According to Washington, D.C.’s Department of Human Service, SNAP’s mission is to help “low-income residents and families buy the food they need for good health.” Read more: dailycaller.com/2014 /06/30/11-things-you -didnt-know-you-coul d-buy-with-food of other things that can be purchased for "good health":Quesarito: Taco Bell is one of many fast food restaurants that accept EBT cards. Guacamole is extra? Who cares? It’s on the taxpayer. Bail: Convicted felons – like drug dealer Kimball Clark –
have reportedly used their EBT as bail money. Clark reportedly
instructed someone to go to an ATM to withdraw money from his EBT for
bail. Because it’s difficult to trace ATM abuse, many speculate this
problem is more widespread and not just found in isolated incidents.Lingerie: Kiss My Lingerie, an adult store in Gonzales, Louisiana,
accepts EBT. Other adult stores have also been known to accept welfare
transactions. In this case, officials said the store doesn’t violate the
rules for EBT because of discrepancies in the law.KFC: Well, chicken is a protein, and protein is good for you, right? KFC is another well-known fast food chain that accepts EBT.Shoes: While Payless ShoeSource is known for their
BOGO sales, they’re certainly not the cheapest place to buy shoes.
Despite the prices and functionality, they also accept EBT.Strip clubs: Last year, the New York Post reported
that FOIA requests revealed welfare recipients were regularly making
EBT withdrawals at the ATMs near and inside infamous porn shops, liquor
stores, lounges and hookah parlors. Technically, it also doesn’t break
the law because of the “cash assistance program.”Lobster: There have been multiple cases of this. As long as it’s not tobacco or alcohol, you’re golden.Starbucks: While corporate stores don’t accept EBT, any Starbucks in a Target or grocery chain is considered a grocery item. So $7.00 for a mocha cookie crumble frappuccino and pumpkin loaf? Go.Cold hard cash: Some people are in the business of selling their EBT benefits for cash. Craigslist has been a great conduit for these “creative entrepreneurs.”K-cups: A lot of people don’t buy coffee in this form because it’s too expensive, but it’s not off limits in the world of welfare.Cupcakes/Gourmet cakes: It’s considered food, no matter the price. Hello, non-essential $45 cake.

Coming Soon? Pot: Colorado became the first state to legalize
the use of recreational marijuana, and they also might become the first
state to have tax payer funded pot smoking. A Colorado Pot Shop called Rite Greens has already taken the steps to officially accept EBT.Read more: dailycaller.com/2014 /06/30/11-things-you -didnt-know-you-coul d-buy-with-food 4951

That's too complicated and cold-hearted. You really should be embarrassed for putting those thoughts out into a public setting.

@podunk: Well if you want to sit there and be thrilled and overjoyed to (1) pay for their truck load of grape soda, Big Macs and twinkles then (2) pay for their bills for repeated doctor and hospital visits to treat their high blood pressure and diabetes, plus a host of other bad diet related ailments, then (3) pay for this monthly VERY PRICEY blood pressure and diabetes meds, every month, for many many years, then knock yourself out.

I will not be sorry to have voiced it, will likely say it again, and you will not shame me I to feeling bad about not wanting to support that behavior and lifestyle. 100% their business as long as THEY pay for it with their own dime. 4951

I have yet to understand why the SNAP program doesn't follow the exact same guidelines as the WIC program! There is absolutely no excuse for sodas, cookies, chips...anything not essential to a healthy diet!!!!!

Keep on screaming about this atrocious misuse of taxpayers monies!!!!!! Apparently liberals just don't 'get it'!!! 4951

@DonnatellaA system encouraged by big Farma and Big Pharma.  Besides, everyone should eat as the Secretary of Labor nominee encourages and the President Elect does.  Funny how the healthy eating rules are government overreach.  Compare the price of healthy, not sugar laden fruit flavored store brand juices with store brand pop.  Eating healthy is more expensive than eating to fill the belly for a day.  4951

@TexasOmaActually, corporate America drives that.  "Liberals" are the ones who favor the equivalent of "sin taxes" on soda.  The corporations and "big government" opponents are the ones who oppose them.  At least get your facts straight before ranting.  And yes, I will post to challenge misrepresentation of facts, which will likely irritate the likes of you to no end.   4951

@podunk: Please tell me this is heavy sarcasm.  Its cold-hearted to ask people to show a little restraint and make healthy choices when buying food with money given to them out of my tax dollars?
