I have a question for all of you. What are the different "rules and regulations" you follow when using your garbage disposal? I have heard people swear that you need to run it with hot water, other that have said cold water, some that will actually throw uneaten meals, not just scraps, down their disposal, some that say grease is okay and others that say no. Is there really a right way it should be used?

I will start it off with my usage. I only use it for something that has slipped by me when cleaning off my dishes, because I scrape the scraps into the trashcan, prior to placing my dishes and pans in the sink to be wash or cleaned before going in the dishwasher. For things that have slipped by, if I know it's something big, like an entire whole carrot, I will pull it out and throw it away. I never put grease down my drain - ever! If I fry something, or have extra butter in a pan from a sauté, I will wipe it out with a paper towel, first, before putting it in the sink. When I run the disposal, I always run cold water, because that is what I was told to do.

Anybody use theirs differently? I mean, I have one friend who said she has shoved an entire pizza down her disposal. I guess my question would be why??? Now, I will throw a lemon or lime wedge(s) down there every now and then to freshen it up a bit, but other than that, I guess I baby mine. Having said that, I have never had a drink back up or replaced a garbage disposal (and I hope I didn't just jinx myself). 4951

I rarely use mine.  Same as you, scraps go into the garbage.  Any grease or butter also goes into garbage once it has set.  I do rinse off dishes on that side of sink before washing so dishwater gets no little goobers in it (I use dishwasher as drying rack, lol).  That is all that may go down the disposal.  I have not heard of the cold vs hot water though. 4951

From Insinkerator:

Run a steady stream of cool water into the sink before turning on the garbage disposal. Learn why cool water in the disposal is best.
Before placing any food waste into the disposal, turn it on first
Gradually feed food waste into the disposal, avoid putting large amounts of food waste all at once as this may slow the grinding process
Once the food waste has been broken down, turn the disposal off and let water run for a few seconds to flush the drain pipe 4951

I've always used hot water to rinse and then turn on the disposal for a minute because I always heard you should bring the hot water on to the sink before turning the dishwasher on. Having to now use cool water is going to take more time! 4951

I use cold water for the disposal, but then once all of that is said and done, I turn on the hot water to rev it up for the dishwasher, even though I know I have a built in water heater for it.

All in all, good to know that I am using it correctly! 4951

Typically cold water, but I don't even think about it so who knows. Usually just scraps. Grease sometimes, but not often. Never had issues with mine. Did have to replace one soon after moving into our house, but I blame that on the previous owner and I think it was really old. We replaced it with a better one. 4951

No grease; that's the #1 thing that stops up drains for both homeowners and the city, at least the parts that come from inside the house. Don't know about hot vs cold water, but I think someone else covered that. We use ours for small leftover food parts that don't get scraped off into the trash. 4951

We put all food scraps down the disposal, with the exception of obvious things like bones or potato skins. Spaghetti clogs easily, too. I can't stand the thought of food scraps in the garbage can. Gross! 4951

Stringy stuff is bad. Like banana peels, lettuce,etc.. Unless you have a grease trap, no greases or butter. Hot or cold water, makes no difference. Some have said dropping a couple of ice cubes in it then running it without water sharpens the cutters, but that may be a myth. Grind up citrus peels in it to make it smell better. 4951

And don't clean it with bleach. It is corrosive. 4951

No grease by any means. The worse thing you can put in the disposal are coffee grounds. The next worse things are potato peelings. Also, don't overload it with too much at one time! Most dishwashers flush directly into your disposal.  The hot water and detergent will work to keep your disposal clean.  Lemon peels help deodorize too. Have a problem with putting food scraps in my kitchen garbage.  Seems we end up little flies or gnats if we do.  Meat trimmings stick to high hell in just a few days. 4951

@ExBlue: I read a year or two ago, everyone with a dishwasher should turn on the hot water before starting your dishwasher. Cold water will initially go into the dishwasher, so for disinfecting the dishes it better to start with hot water. With that being said "the expert" must not know how expensive COH water is.  Emoticon

Was told by a plumber once to fill up both side of the sink with equal water thrnpull the plugs at the same time. This helps to flush out anything in the drains. We do it once in awhile since I love to throw everything down the drain but bones lol 4951
