Just in the last day, House Republicans moved to weaken the independent ethics office that investigates House lawmakers and staff accused of misconduct. During a closed-door meeting Monday, by a vote of 119 to 74, House Republicans defied their leadership to adopt an amendment by Rep Bob Goodlatte, R-Va, to place the Office of Congressional Ethics, known as OCE, under the jurisdiction of the House Ethics Committee. But just hours before the 115th Congress gavels in Tuesday, Trump said GOP lawmakers would be better off focusing on other domestic policy issues instead of going after the ethics watchdog.http://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/house-gop-votes-move-ethics-oversight-under-its-own-control-n702471But after Trumps criticism, the House GOP reverses itself on Ethics changes.https://www.washingtonpost.com/powerpost/gop-to-start-on-ambitious-conservative-agenda-as-congress-convenes-today/2017/01/03/6117cbe2-d1a1-11e6-945a-76f69a399dd5_story.html?utm_term=.d0457035303fI'm sure the GOP has some lame reasoning for the media/people as to why they tried to do this, but in reality, it's all about CONTROL and they DON"T want some independent organization watching for their corruption and misconduct. Now, for die-hard Republicans, shouldn't this give you pause in your support?!?  BTW, I'm not pro-Democrat or pro-Republican.  I am simply pro-Ethics, pro-Constitution, pro-Smaller Government, pro-Deficit and Debt Reduction, etc, etc.Score:+1 for P.E. Trump  -1 for House GOP 4951

Even when they do violate ethics laws nothing is done. Look at Charlie Rangel. On July 29, 2010, Rangel was charged by the committee with 13 counts of violating House rules and federal laws.He was censored. Members of Congress who have been censured are required to give up any committee chairs they hold.13 VIOLATIONS!!!! NOTHING WAS DONE TO HIM. 4951

RE, I couldn't believe it when I heard that. Of course they want to get rid of the ethics committee because we all know they have no ethics. Had Trump not called them out on it, it would have passed. Glad he did. Hopefully he's not going to let them try to pass this stuff in private. This was led by a repub. 4951

It does appear they are trying to protect themselves before Trump starts looking at things they do not want anyone to see. Charlie Rangel would have been FIRED in any other job in the country to include Government jobs barring Congress and Senate seats. He would not be trusted to do any job but Congress or Senate. Think about that for a minute. 4951

@Retired_Engineer: Not possible. It's like making teenagers clean their rooms every week but they get to decide on what is clean. If they somehow still fail their own standards, then can't play sports or join any clubs which is usually not an issue for a sloppy kid.

Maybe we should have the people in charge of ethics actually be ethical? That would be refreshing. 4951

@beastmode:  That's why we need stronger ethics definitions/investigations and penalties that an independent board can administer.  Or, at the very least, release their findings and force a recall election so the people can decide.  The recall election should not only be whether or not to recall the politician, but about what penalties they would face.

@TexasOma:  Not if we just sit back and accept it!  If you do, then you're just as guilty as the corrupt politicians.  At least write/email your representative and Senators and let them know how you feel.  Ted Poe's webpagehttps://poe.house.gov/contact-form#form_D05B44B5-B782-4DC7-BED6-FF0C90951FFFSenator John Cornyn's webpagehttps://www.cornyn.senate.gov/contactSenator Ted Cruz's webpagehttps://www.cruz.senate.gov/?p=email_senatorI tend to be cynical about many things as well.  However, we MUST at least make an attempt to reduce corruption in Congress and DC.

@Retired_Engineer: For the record, I despise the Republican leadership and their toadies. I'm an anarcho-capitalist. Now, as far as this ethics committee goes, I'd like to know what the rationale is. The Republicans must have known the optics would be terrible, so why do it?

@beastmode:  Much of that lack of punishment, other than censure, was a result of the House Ethics Committee, not the OCE.  The same with OCE findings against Maxine Waters. The House Ethics Committee declined to pursue charges against her.  Nathan Deal resigned before OCE charges were publicized. After the OCE report was publicized, the House Ethics Committee (also known as the Committee on Standards of Official Conduct) never commented on the OCE findings.Right now, the only thing the OCE can do is investigate and issue findings reports.  They do not have the power of subpoena, or the ability to file charges.  I think they should have both and their organization must remain independent.

While I believe that there should be ethics oversight, citing NBC and the Washington Post? They're both just liberal rags straining against the current. Also there is no way anything will be politically independent in D.C. 4951

@HollyHobby:  I don't know what their "public" reasoning was, but we all know it's because they fear they will be caught in ethics violations.  That won't happen if the House controls the OCE like they do the House Ethics Committee (which I'm sure would have gotten merged had they been successful).  Why did they do it?  See the above paragraph. How did they do it?   They did it quietly behind closed doors just hours before the 115th Congress was officially begun, preventing new Reps from voting on it.  They also hoped the public wouldn't even know about it, or not care.  After P.E. Trump chastised the GOP House and the media reported on it, the GOP dropped the proposal.  If they had decided to continue with it, the FULL NEW House would have had to vote on it.We can thank House Speaker Paul Ryan and Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy for speaking against this vote.  I don't know who leaked the news to the media, but I applaud him/her.Interestingly enough, the OCE was formed in 2008 under the leadership of Speaker of the House  Nancy Pelosi (gag!), so a thank you to her as well.
