Is the difference at the threshold? If it is you could "possibly" treat it as 2 different floors and put a trim piece in. Is it laminate or 3/4" hardwood?
Trust me on this ( been there done that) you really really don't want to mess with jack hammering it out to get it flush. Just. Don't . Do. It!!
@Jpgurl: The closet has a pocket door and the threshold is slightly higher, (they screwed that up as well) then it tapers down some but still to high for wood floor install. The older part of the house from 1970 is great. It's the new areas the prior owner added on in the 80's. I have fixed several of their cut corners. I have not started installing any floors yet. Just prepping it right now. I have chipped out about a foot but man, it is taking me a long time with a sledge and a good chisel. I know there are those impact style hand held chisels but those are several hundred dollars and I would likely never use it again. Â Â Â Â
