Was all set to install wood floors in a bedroom myself. Ran into a problem when I pulled up the carpet, the closet concrete is raised 2 inches higher. The closet was added on by the previous owner. They poured it outside and then when they cut in were off the mark but carpet was put in so not a real issue. Tried to chip it out without buying a power tool like Andy Dufrene but no thanks. It's going to take way too long. Hard to find someone to do a small job like this from experience. Probably have to end up renting a small jack hammer for a day.   4951

@ET: Not an option. Wife wants wood floors in the closet. There is no reasoning with insanity.

@BooBear: I knew it might be an issue but with the carpet and padding still down hard to tell. I started from the ceiling down...removing popcorn, installing recess lights, new fan, crown molding, painting...the floors are the final piece of the puzzle and the piece I'm tackling now.

difference?

@BooBear:

2 inches makes a big difference.. Lol and yes I am talking about carpet in closet. There would be a slight hump in the closet because the floor wouldn't be level 4951

Is the difference at the threshold? If it is you could "possibly" treat it as 2 different floors and put a trim piece in. Is it laminate or 3/4" hardwood?
Trust me on this ( been there done that) you really really don't want to mess with jack hammering it out to get it flush. Just. Don't . Do. It!! 4951

@Jpgurl: The closet has a pocket door and the threshold is slightly higher, (they screwed that up as well) then it tapers down some but still to high for wood floor install. The older part of the house from 1970 is great. It's the new areas the prior owner added on in the 80's. I have fixed several of their cut corners. I have not started installing any floors yet. Just prepping it right now. I have chipped out about a foot but man, it is taking me a long time with a sledge and a good chisel. I know there are those impact style hand held chisels but those are several hundred dollars and I would likely never use it again.

@sweetie: Yes, I noticed it but there is a pocket door. I thought they only raised that threshold since the pocket door gap was likely off. I was correct, they did that but the rest of the closet is still slight too high but not the 2 inches in the threshold.

Leaning towards buying a rock drill. It's such a small job, nobody is going to want to mess with it. Not worth their time. I want to install the floors myself since I have several more rooms to do. I could afford to pay someone but the potential to save a lot is there even with factoring in an expensive drill. Rest of the floor is very level so I know it's not a foundation issue. Just this one area.      4951
