I can't boil eggs.

I feel like such a culinary failure. I've tried over and over again, and either get them not quite done in the center, get the grey ring, or when I peel them, I lose a lot of the whites that stick.

Out of desperation, I Googled...

Found step my step, Moron 101 instructions, along with pictures, posted by the Pioneer Woman, and I'm going to try again. 4951

@FoFa, at first I thought that was a joke, but it seems to work perfectly. One-handed peeling, too.

That still leaves me with the "how long to boil" question. I use Jumbo eggs and about half the time, the yolks don't completely cook or I get the grey ring.

I started with the cold start, bring to boil, cover and let sit 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 minutes. Got hit or miss results at best.

Chef at work said boil them longer 4-5 min.

Then Pioneer Woman said hot start.

So many methods.

I know that if I start to smell egg when boiling they are overdone. I to it down to a fine art! 4951

Boil 8 minutes. Set a timer so you don't forget. Drop into cold water for a minute, peel under cold running water.

But, you can always get an Egg McMuffin. 4951

@TheTruthHurts: Just say NO to the McD.

Seriously, I want to get this right. A boiled egg and orange slices or grapes are a great lighter breakfast, and I like to keep them ready in the fridge.

Boiled Eggs

@FoFa: Someone at work, a few years back sent me that recipe. It does work. Before that I would boil them and couldn't get the shells off easily, even after letting them sit in cold water.  My DH said he knew how to make boiled egg. Was at work one morning and decided to eat the egg my husband had boiled, the yoke was a runny mess. He knew how to make soft boiled eggs. It was very disappointing.

I know it sounds weird but it worked. Put the eggs in a cupcake pan and bake. They turned out perfect when I tried it. 4951

Put the eggs in cold water, bring to a boil, turn off the heat, sit in water for 15 minutes covered, move to an ice bath. Older eggs peel easier and I read adding baking soda to the cooking water makes them peel easier. I haven't tried it yet. 4951

I thought it was vinegar that you add to the water.  Never heard of adding baking soda.

@SandyKnee:  That's what I had heard as well.  My wife regularly boils eggs to go with salads. To reduce cholesterol/fat,  I eat the whites and the dogs LOVE the yolks (even with the grey/green coating).  She's even gone to egg whites for scrambled eggs and omelets.  Now, I do still like the yolks on deviled eggs!@donnatella:  I thought this thread was going to be naughty!  I'm very disappointed in you!
