after 47 years with the same company my husband was let go on Tuesday . No retirement benefits , no medical , nothing , not even a hand shake . They sent a guy to the house to get his cell phone & computer & all the flyers & ads that my husband had that pertained to the products the company sold . So on Wednesday hubby spent the day on the phone getting medical insurance . On Thursday he went to the unemployment office to register here in Kentucky & he was told since the company he worked for is in Houston he has to file in Texas . So he called & took care of that , now he has to apply at 3 companies per week in order to get his unemployment check . I feel so sad for him , he gave 47 years to a company with no benefits & there are probably very few companies that will hire anyone that is ready to retire . Thank goodness our home is paid for so we do not have to worry about that & I have a small income that will keep us a float  . You never know what will happen around the next corner , so you need to be ready for anything. I'm so glad that we have all our Christmas shopping done & Christmas will still be at our home this year . We will pray that the New Year will bring better times , we have our health & our family & those are the important things , everything else can be managed in time . 4951

Sucky way of doing it but on the bright side, not too many people get to work anywhere for 47 years.  He is retirement age, they gave him the push to start the next phase of his life - hope you all are ready to enjoy. 4951

@WJo:
Sorry to hear about the bad news and the timing is awful ...some companies don't seem to value their employees like they used to but always encourage him and tell him that when one door closes another door opens ....

What company?  They need to be boycotted if we can.Sounds like you have planned for such a  possibility.Good luck to your husband.  There will be something better in your future.  Have a very great and happy Christmas and may 2017 be a year of opportunity for bigger and greater things. 4951

47 years and he dodged every other layoff they've had? That's a great run.

You have lots for which to be thankful.

I do hope insurance costs go down for everyone.

Are you glad now that you didn't sell for a bigger house?

@WJo So sorry to hear this.  Prayers for you and your family.  I cannot believe they did not offer any kind of package--health insurance some sort of severance pay.  I am so sorry.  Hoping 2017 brings great things for you guys.  4951

@WJo: I'm sorry they dismissed him in such a callous manner. All the good things you listed makes methink you both will do alright.

So sorry this happened...Unfortunately people are pretty much just numbers on a chart now.  You'll get through it and realize there were rainbows in the clouds....after being "Enron-ed", losing a business and a couple more layoffs, we realized we are survivors and we are STILL blessed.   Tell your hubby not to take it personally.  4951

Same thing happened to me after a 31 career with the same company. Scarey at first but worked out to be the best thing that could have happened to me. I started a new career with some folks I've worked with in the past and I love the new company!

Like it's been said, if a door shuts God will open a window. Best of luck to you and prayers are coming your way. 4951

Something very similar happened to my husband. He has learned that having more time with his family is a gift indeed. He is getting to enjoy the baby stages of our grandson, and is wittiness to all those sweet moments he missed too many of with our boys because he was working so hard.  Even though it was earlier than he had planned,we consider this his retirement.   We spend much less money on gas, clothes, haircuts and all those work related things.  He didn't file unemployment (he's hard headed that way) and did not get anything but an extra month's pay.  If your husband is like mine, he had a lot of his identity connected to his job.  It takes a while to realize that shift has an emotional component and to find other ways to have fulfillment. After the initial shock of having our route changed unexpectedly we try to focus on what we still have.   We have had much bigger loss in the last year and a half and that has probably helped us keep our focus on what is most important in our life.  We have a roof over our head, food on the table, and people to love. We try to remember that whenever we feel sad or mourn our losses.  I wish you and your husband the very best for the days you have ahead.  4951
