I have a niece moving to KW and the house they like (basic starter home) is very cute but there is not a pantry in the kitchen. It isn't a deal breaker for her but she is just hoping there will be enough cabinet space for food storage. I told her that perhaps she could buy some kind of portable pantry at IKEA and put it in the utility room which is next to the kitchen. Anyone here have a similar issue with a kitchen that doesn't have a pantry?  How do you store your canned goods, etc?    4951

Just put the cans and food in the cabinets. When we moved to TX as a kid, my mom put the food in the cabinets even though we had a pantry.  She used the pantry more like a closet.  I'm guessing we didn't have a pantry in the previous house (can't remember since I was so young when we moved). 4951

Brand new house here with no pantry. Our small what they consider a "pantry" is in our laundry room that is right off the kitchen. We store mostly the canned food and what not in there and that's about it. 4951

Just realized I do not have a pantry in the house I moved in early last year. But I have a ton of cabinets (several are empty (lol) so plenty of room for stuff. 4951

@donnatella: I'm sort of in that camp too, but then I think I'm a bit of a hoarder when it comes to my staples and such.  But when I think about it, I grew up in a home with 5 kids and no pantry and my mother seemed to manage just fine.   Niece said she didn't even realize (1st time home buyer) that there wasn't a pantry until her offer was accepted but she is very happy with the home so no pantry while nice to have, wouldn't have caused her to not buy the home.

I have had a pantry in every home I have ever lived in.  I have two in my current home.  I do not think I would buy a house without a pantry.  If the kitchen was huge and had lots of storage, I might consider it.  I personally want a butler's pantry to store all the small appliances in.  Your niece is young and maybe she does not need to have as large of a stockpile as I do.   4951

Hey there, I too use my cabinet as a pantry and I don't think it as super necessary. Als you can avail plenty of portable pantries in the market. Go for one if necessary. Just be cool that your niece is happy and the house looks cute as you said. 4951

I have two pantries in my house. One is like the standard walk-in and the second is about twice as deep as the standard pantry with a bunch of shelves in it. 4951

No pantry would definitely be a deal breaker for me - then again, I grew up in a house with a pantry so big it was our "safe place" during hurricane alicia. When we were looking for a home in Kingwood we passed on a couple nice homes because they lacked a nice big walk-in pantry. It doesn't help that the hubby loves to cooks and hoards spices and sauces, either. 4951

Garage shelves. Or garage storage units for tools work great. My Grandma was a canner, and the garage shelves were filled with jars of all kinds of jellies and such. 4951

Our pantry is small, and we added storage by getting some wire type shelving (think it is made by Rubbermaid). It is a one piece unit with several shelves. We put one on the inside of the pantry door & one on the wall in the laundry room behind the door. This added a lot of storage. I believe we purchased these at Lowe's. They were very easy to install. 4951

She could also do just open shelving in laundry room- some simple braces and some wood that she can paint white- very cost efficient.
I also use a plastic shoe holder( u know the ones u find at bed bath and beyond on a door on in my pantry for snacks and spices- the pockets work great for my kids to grab snacks and easy for me to sort.
Where there's a will there's a way lol
Good luck! 4951

My grandmother's pantry, later ours when we moved into the house, was a coat closet in the hall between the kitchen and the living room. The pantry in the upstairs apartment was a standing cabinet, not built in, next to the fridge. 4951

I grew up in a house without a kitchen pantry and pretty minimal cabinet space. We used that and just had to manage inventory closely. Eventually Dad added another set of lowers with a counter top on an empty wall, Mom thought that was the bee's knees. My last three houses have have pantries, I did not care for the reach in kind we had in last house, so now I'm happy with my corner walk in pantry we have now. 4951
