I would recommend having a spare tire and all tools needed to swap out a tire, plus an all in one kit like the one linked below..https://www.amazon.com/Stanley-JC509-1000-Starter-Compressor/dp/B002X6VXL4Edited to fix link.. 4951

@JackDaneCPA: Yes we have one. It has come in handy when our battery died.   4951

emergency water pouches look like a good idea.  plastic water bottles degrade and make the water taste bad over time in the hot sun. 4951

Good to have the basics already mentioned, but also either AAA or make sure you have tow truck companies already programmed in contacts, so they can be called when you need to get towed off the freeway.  It's not worth changing a tire near a freeway even if you have all the stuff to do so.  Jump starts at the office, however, are worth having the cables and not having to call and wait for AAA.  4951

@foxymamaDude I say toss a can (or 2) of Fix A Flat in that Car Emergency Kit, as well as a roll of Duct-Tape, a Hand Towel, maybe a small pack of those Hand Toilettes, a roll of TP, a package of Chewing Gum and a roll of Life Savers....

How about one of those back up battery/charger things for your cell phone? If he travels where there are icy roads, two 10lb bags of sand/cat litter. 4951

@foxymama:  I've never felt any need for a urinal.  If I'm stuck in traffic jams, I open my car/truck door and urinate between the door and the body of the vehicle.  Now, a bowel movement is entirely different!Funny story on this topic:  Many years ago, my parents were driving over from Baton Rouge to visit us.  I was at work and Debbie had to run into Atascocita at the last minute.  She was in a rush in case my parents got here earlier than planned.  As she was coming back over the WLH bridge, she noticed a car pulled to the side that looked like my parents car.  As she got closer, she saw the LA license plate.  By this time, she was passing them and about to pull over to see what was wrong.  Then she glanced over as she passed them and my mother had a map out over my the steering wheel.  Debbie then realized that my dad was urinating into a plastic soft drink bottle!  He always kept a couple in the car in case of just such emergencies. My mom was trying to cover him with the map. Debbie just laughed and kept driving on to the house.  My parents showed up about 5 minutes later.  I sure do miss my parents, especially my dad!
