On this date President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas. With his murder America lost a super intelligent and eloquent leader. Without his steady hand and of course prayer, there's the huge possibility that none of us would be here today as the world would have descended into a nuclear nightmare in October 1962. While JFK was no saint in regards to his personal life, he remains a towering figure in our history whose premature removal from the scene continues to affect us to this very day.

Hardly any need to mention his indescretions. People tend to forgive those of a president that is doing a great job. Bill Clinton is a perfect example of that.

JFK was in Dallas that day because his team was sure they would lose Texas in the next election. Even with Johnson on the ticket. He was an enigmatic leader but hardly an effective president. 4951

@rocket:
The record reflects it was not just his personal life. I was not alive during his era where an adoring media sheltered his legacy and promoted false idols, but his actual historical record is unflattering and unimpressive.  It is often said that America lost its innocence as a result of his assassination, but it still amazes me how many Americans want to cling to innocence regarding his legacy. 4951

@Spork: Over the years I have researched JFK extensively.  At this point I could probably write my own book on the man.  So from a personal point of view I'm not "clinging to innocence regarding his legacy".  JFK was one of our most brilliant presidents on several levels.  As this is a message board I won't go into a doctoral dissertation as to why I think this is so.  However you and anyone else are entitled to your opinions.  I manly posted this as a memorial to the senseless murder of a president.  On that point most decent minded individuals can agree.

My parents were democrats then. They loved Kennedy. I'm sure if they were alive today they'd be repubs or an independent like me. My mom always said that they were dems but if a better person was running they'd switch. I think that's why I'm an independent. Thank you parents. 4951

Some say that missle crisis he saved us from was a result of his own actions Others say the same for his death. The assasination was a senseless act and a huge shock to the whole country.

I do not hold the Kennedys with the same reverence many do. Another political elite that succeeded more through charisma and salesmanship than any great leadership and has hopefully come to the end of the road.

I was 14 & a freshman sitting in a history class at San Jacinto High School. I knew nothing of politics, only that Kennedy was our President and he was shot. I was a very sad time and still is. As much as I despise Obama, I would never wish that some fool assassinate him. Several have attempted to intrude into the WH grounds, one even made it into the WH & was stopped. Because of the Kennedy assassination and attempt on Reagan, our SS has become aware of that there are some crazy, crazy folks out there and do a good job of protecting our President.  4951

Before my time, but when I was in college in the 90's, I became obsessed with the assassination. I've read countless books (before the internet), visited the 6th floor museum many times, stood behind the picket fence (not there anymore) and even visited the intersection in Oak Cliff where Officer Tippit was shot. I think this is literally the greatest mystery of our time.  4951

I was in a classroom in an elementary school when the Principle announced the President had been shot over the PA system.  We students were too young to fully grasp it, but the teachers reaction was of shock. I was too young to understand politics, but we all knew he was a very popular President.  I can also remember watching Jack Ruby shoot Oswald live on TV. I've read several books about the assassination itself.  I have my doubts that Lee Harvey Oswald was the lone assassin, but we'll never know for sure.  The assassination was the biggest news since WWII, and everyone wanted to be a part of it.  Witnesses have changed their stories over the years.  Some witnesses have been found to have been somewhere else at the time of the assassination... they just wanted to be part of the investigation.  Some authors have coached witnesses to support their theory for their book.  Even "The Warren Commission Report" has some conflicting data and unanswered questions.  If police forensics had been better in those days, maybe we would know more. 4951
