We Really want a one story ranch style home but they are hard to find around here in the 2500 sq ft and higher range. Anybody have experience with building a new home? Was it worth it or too much of a pain the butt? 4951

Our home was new construction. I recommend being there frequently when the workers are there. I tried not to intrude but to drop off cold gatorade and treats while they were working and tell them how much I appreciated their work. I left quickly so that they could resume. I spent less than $100 and both my inspectors said our house is one of the better built in the neighborhood. 4951

One suggestion - Create a gmail account dedicated to the house process. That way, you don't have to sort through other email clutter. 4951

My first house was a new build in Humble, way back when I was single and wanted to start building equity. It worked out okay, because it was a starter home, but for sure the builders cut every corner they can, so you have to be on them all the time. Also, keep in mind if it is a new development, you will have the things that go along with that like flat tires with all the nails and screws in the street, music blaring on Saturday mornings at 7:30 when you might want to sleep etc.We also had a house built in the country by a custom builder where we bought the plans and he helped us tailor a few things. We didn't have to hound him at all, as we were still living overseas then, and he built the house to perfection. So, if you go custom, just make sure the builder has a lot of good references or is tied to the local community and depends on a good rep in that community to maintain his business. 4951

Custom home went up next to us and it took almost a year to complete. Also, the owners had more than a few problems right off the bat. The allure of new is strong but I tend to like a gently used home. 4951

We have never owned a pre-existing home. Four brand new from the ground up houses. It's stressful and a pain, but I have such OCD that I love being able to call the shots. HOWEVER - plan to be on site every single day with a checklist and a microscope. The crews do some of the stupidest things I've ever seen. You have to catch it quick. 4951

I couldn't be there everyday. We are thinking of buying over 1 hour north of our current residence. Â Â 4951
