A friend of mine has one and loves it.  My brother in law got an off brand one at Academy that he loves and I like better after seeing both being used. 4951

It's an outdoor cooker, it grills, smokes, roasts, bakes.  It's green and looks like a big egg. 4951

Personally I wouldn't buy one unless I was doing an outdoor kitchen with a built in.

They cook well but are extremely heavy and ceramic (ie fragile). Not too cheap either.

Basically they are a kiln for food. 4951

My parents have one.  It's big and very heavy.  If you get one figure out where you want it and leave it there.  It cooks well.  Everything I have had that was cooked on it was delicious. They do coast a lot but it could not be more than the Pitts and Spitts my DH has.  If you go for high end, it will be a bit pricey.   4951

Any opinions?

@MarT: That's about the only style of cooker I have yet to own...And probably never will. I have nothing against them personally...I would just rather sink money into heavy steel over ceramic. I've cooked on a few of them (BGEs & knock-offs) that buddies own and they do a great job. They're expensive to buy and sometimes maintain, but most feel it is worth it. They're really popular with northerners because of the insulation properties of the ceramic. Once they get hot, they stay hot. To answer your question about when they're cheaper in stores - anything grill related is usually put on sale after the summer is over but before they put away their stock for winter...Septemberish. Finding one used is always a good option since they last a long time when they're taken care of.  4951

I was looking at the big green eggs, and someone recommended a pellet smoker.I purchased a Rectec and we love it. You put the meat in it, set the temperature an watch the thermometer until it is done.  You can cook just about anything on it. I currently have a prime rib on it now. www.rectecgrills.com /rec-tec-wood-pellet -grill-rt-680/

I have owned those and others..........A WEBER kettle grill is pretty hard to beat. They work great, not the cheapest but the fact remains they just work well and more importantly you get consistent repeatable delicious results. My propane days are pretty much over and I just use charcoal now. Cant beat the flavor imo. 4951

I have had a Weber grill for a good 9 years now and it is still in n great shape and cooks great.  I can't say that about any gas grill I have owned.  The gas ones usually rust out on me after 3 years.  Even the fancy pricey gas ones don't last either. 4951
