I think many still see homeschool as a child at table with stacks of books and no friends....lol
Below is a typical month for us.
Mondays:If nothing is on calendar we start weekly lessons and finish reviews from previose weeks for about 2 hours.
Tuesday: Heart Parkday for about 4 hours with aproximatly 30 others...give or take. Some at home assignments.
Wednesday: If nothing on calendar we do assignments for about 2 hours.
Thursday: Computer class at Tullis Library(about 10 students) and Science type class as Lake Houston Wilderness Park with about 30 students. Some at home assignments.
Friday: Every other Friday Girl Scouts...use to be morning but we wanted to accommodate if any public school kids wanted in so now its later so we do assignments at home first. Every other Friday HOME parkday with about 20 or so kids and 2 hours assignments at home.
This is only our repeated penciled in stuff. We usually have 2 to 4 other things a week that are not penciled in.
Examples: extra parkdays. Extra science classes. Workshops for GS like first aid, wood working, movie making, animal care..etc Lots of organized sports available too.
Field trips like old mcdonalds, aquarium, museum, guest speakers, zoo, holiday parties, preteen get togethers like u swirl or chic fil let.
Our yearly valentines party usually tips 200 participants. Dances, homecoming, graduations, thanksgiving feast and much more.
Its endless. Both our area homeschool groups have something on the calendar every single day. You just flat out cant do it all. So if a child comes out of homeschool shy or introverted its because thats just their personality. If they come out unsocial or unskilled thats because they just decided not to participate and is not at the fault of the homeschool community in general.
We literally have to sit down every sunday and decide what we just cant do and fit in....lol We have such a full schedual we dont even participate in homerun or super Friday as mentioned in post above and this is just two groups. Houston area has several more. The ones I mentioned are just the 2 closest we are involved in.
So to the original poster. If you are worried about your kid not being challenged in Public school then give homeschool past K5 a thought. We have a very supportive and active homeschool community. Almost too active...I feel guilty I cant do it all but if we did we wouldnt get any school work done......😱
Edited to say...HOME is a homeschool group but at home assignments is just us at home....lol 4951
