My family is looking to start our own family holiday traditions. As a kid growing up my whole family always did certain thing during the holidays and I didn't understand the importance of it then but I do now. I want to teach my kids the value of family tradition during the holidays, not base everything around money. SO, with all that being, said I am wondering what sort of tradition do other people have? What are your family holiday traditions? Good and bad. 4951

@fcat1444:
You could wake up and make a special batch of cookies that you only make on Christmas day. I give credit to my mom for that idea she used to make them from scratch.

Years ago when my kiddos got old enough we started baking cooks the night before and letting them decorate the cookies to leave out for santa clause. But that one kind of turned into just baking cookies for christmas since they no longer believe in ole saint nick. But yes it is a good idea, special cookies during the holidays is always great and we are thinking about trying out different recipes this year. 4951

Black Friday is spent having breakfast, bringting down the Christmas decor with the fireplace and Christmas music going, putting up the tree, watching Christmas/holiday movies, then having turkey sandwiches from the leftovers.

We stay completely out of the stores, and If any shopping is done, it's just a small amount online. 4951

One suggestion from my mom- Just once a year she buys the Sara Lee Coffee cake and makes scrambled eggs to go with it. The reason she chose it was the coffee cake goes straight from freezer to the oven and can then be served with no effort. Not the best thing in the world to eat but it didn't take her away from Christmas morning fun like other more complicated meals. 4951

Hubby and I spend the 3 days after Thanksgiving putting out exterior Christmas lights and decorations. I am pretty sure he thought I was crazy when I told him how much I did for decor before we married. Now, he has certainly jumped on the decorating bandwagon. I couldn't do it all without him. 4951

We spend Thanksgiving at my sisters and she does her tree different themes every year.  So after Thanksgiving we make homemade ornaments to decorate her tree.  One year we made salt dough cookies and painted them to hang on the tree.  We used five or six cookie shaped and painted them all different.  For Christmas Eve I always had to work when my girls were little, so they stayed with my mom, and they would bake and watch Christmas movies and cartoons until I got home, we would have a light dinner and clean up for Santa.  We crashed early and they got up EARLY on Christmas morning.  Santa doesnt wrap presents at out house,  4951

I think it was an old English custom done by my Mother's parents.  We always hung stockings on the foot of our bed [the largest ones we could find].  In the morning the stockings were filled with nuts and a piece of fresh fruit.If we were bad we would get a piece of coal......only happened to by brother one time.We used to take the boys to see Santa in one of the malls. Of course every time we went to a different mall they just had to see that Santa too. After having Santa ask them each time what they wanted the youngest told Santa: "Why the hell can't you remember anything?" 4951

Well unfortunately we have to change our food preparation as my daughter has been recently diagnosed to food allergies to poultry and pork including turkey. Instead of turkey we will be having either roast or beef ribs for the upcoming holidays. We were told she can have duck or other birds like quail or dove or pheasant. So her training with a 4H shotgun team should come to use later. lol 4951

We have a REALLY UGLY shirt that gets wrapped and given to someone as a gag every year. Just mixed in with all the other presents under the tree. The only person who knows who is getting is it the person who got it the last year. There's always howling laughter when the unsuspecting family member opens it.  4951

I like the tradition of reading aloud from the Bible the story of birth of Christ. When I was child it was always my Grandfather who read it, and then as time went on it changed and different people would read it. We do it every Christmas Eve. 4951

My grandmother always bought the entire family new underwear. She always had my size right but never the color or style I would choose so they were always the last clean ones worn. After they were dirty, it REALLY was time to do laundry. I miss getting them now. 4951

I am going to start making my kiddos Christmas pajama pants that they will get to open and wear for December. I also plan to do a 12 days of Christmas with books, ginger bread house, holiday movie, etc (all things we can do as a family. They will open a gift each of the 12 days of Christmas and we will do the thing as a family. Saw it on Pinterest. Christmas tree picking also, hated it as a kid so I plan to torture my own family with it. Lol. Also do special traditional foods for Christmas Eve and day. 4951

I'm thinking of starting a "get the heck out of town" tradition.  Maybe find a cruise and not have to do a damn thing for a week. 4951
